WWE Royal Rumble Flashback: Shawn Michaels Goes Wire to Wire and Back to Back (1995 and 1996)
Shawn Michaels gave us a glimpse of his future greatness when he won the Royal Rumble in 1995 and 1996.
After starting as a tag team wrestler with The Rockers, Michaels broke out as a singles star after throwing partner Marty Jannetty through a window.
Michaels called himself “The HeartBreak Kid” and won the Intercontinental title twice before entering the 1995 Royal Rumble in the No. 1 spot.
Davey Boy Smith was No. 2, and after 28 men rumbled in and out of the match, Michaels and Davey Boy were the last men standing.
Davey Boy powered HBK over the top rope, and he started celebrating as his music played.
But wait! Shawn pulled off an amazing feat of agility by dangling from the ropes for more than 10 seconds, with only one foot touching the floor.
Michaels recovered and knocked Davey Boy out of the ring for the shocking victory. He became the first wrestler to draw No. 1 and win the Rumble.
At WrestleMania XI, Michaels was unable to defeat his former bodyguard, Diesel, in their WWF title match.
HBK WINS AGAIN IN 1996
Shawn gained a measure of revenge by winning the 1996 Royal Rumble, as he superkicked Diesel out of the match for the win.
Michaels drew No. 18, and he racked up eight eliminations in his 26 minutes in the ring.
While Shawn was a heel in 1995, the fans were on his side for his second victory.
At WrestleMania XII, Michaels battled Bret Hart in an Iron Man match for the WWF title. After 60 minutes, neither man had scored a fall.
The match went into overtime, and Shawn hit a pair of superkicks to win his first World Wrestling Federation championship.
