WWE Royal Rumble Flashback: Randy Orton and Edge Move to the Top (2009 and 2010)
Triple H and Randy Orton opened a new chapter in their rivalry at the 2009 Royal Rumble.
They used to be teammates in the Evolution faction that also included Ric Flair and Batista.
Orton had become the youngest World champion at age 24 when he beat Chris Benoit at SummerSlam 2004.
However, Triple H turfed Orton out of the group and won the championship one month later.
At the end of the 2009 Rumble, Triple H was all alone against Orton and his own Legacy faction, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr.
HHH managed to eliminate the younger members, but Orton tossed Triple H to win the Rumble.
However, Triple H got the last laugh. He won the World title at No Way Out 2009 in the Elimination Chamber match and then beat Orton at WrestleMania 25.
Other matches at Royal Rumble 2009 included:
· ECW champion Jack Swagger over Matt Hardy
· Melina over Beth Phoenix to win the women’s title
· John Cena over JBL to retain the World title
· Edge over Jeff Hardy to win the WWE title when Matt Hardy attacked his brother
ROYAL RUMBLE 2010
Edge was a model of efficiency when he won the 2010 Royal Rumble.
He clocked in at No. 29 and tossed John Cena to win the match after less than eight minutes of work.
Edge earned a shot at the WWE title at WrestleMania 26, but he lost to Chris Jericho.
Jericho had won the belt from Sheamus, who retained the title at Royal Rumble with a disqualification win over Randy Orton.
Mickie James won the women’s title from Michelle McCool, gaining revenge for McCool and Layla calling her fat.
Other results from Royal Rumble 2010 included:
· Christian over Ezekiel Jackson to retain the ECW title
· The Miz over MVP to retain the US title
· Undertaker over Rey Misterio to retain the World title
