WWE King and Queen of the Ring Preview: Winners Get Title Shots at SummerSlam
WWE boss Triple H announced yesterday that the winners of this Saturday’s King & Queen of the Ring tournaments will get title shots at SummerSlam in Cleveland on Aug. 3.
The lineup for this weekend’s pay-per-view will be finalized tonight on Smackdown. The PPV will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
King of the Ring
Gunther has dominated the Raw bracket in the same way he held a stranglehold on the Intercontinental title. He will face the winner of tonight’s Smackdown match between Randy Orton and Tama Tonga.
Orton, a 13-time World champion, is the heavy favorite. However, you never know when The Bloodline will tip the scales in favor of Tama Tonga.
Queen of the Ring
Lyra Valkyria stormed through the Raw bracket after an impressive run as NXT women’s champion. She will face the winner of the Bianca Belair vs. Nia Jax match on Smackdown.
Belair is the favorite, but Jax has been an impressive powerhouse since her return to WWE.
WWE title
Logan Paul will be playing with house money as he challenges Cody Rhodes for the WWE title. Rhodes scored one of the most emotional wins in wrestling history when he dethroned Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
Paul has been quietly putting together an impressive US title reign, and that belt will not be on the line this weekend. Imagine if Paul scores the upset and comes home to Cleveland at SummerSlam with the US and WWE titles!
World Women’s title
Rhea Ripley was dominating this division until an injury forced her to give up the belt. Lynch won a battle royale to capture her seventh Women’s title.
Liv Morgan targeted Becky due to her animosity toward Ripley. Liv blamed Ripley for her own injury, so she is focused on taking anything that is important to Ripley.
This is a great opportunity for Morgan to become the top champion on Raw. Her previous win over Ronda Rousey for the Smackdown title seemed like a fluke since Liv won the belt by cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase.
Intercontinental title
Sami Zayn will defend the IC belt in a Triple Threat match against Chad Gable and Bronson Reed. Zayn won the title in an inspirational victory at WrestleMania to end Gunther’s record-shattering IC title reign.
However, Gable thought it should have been his moment. He had nearly dethroned Gunther but was unable to get a second chance. He turned heel and started bullying his Alpha Academy teammates, including lovable big man Otis.
(Jeff Gorman attended the first King of the Ring pay-per-view in 1993. Bret Hart won the crown with wins over Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, and Bam Bam Bigelow.)
