WNBA Announces Big Changes For 2025 Season

The WNBA just had the biggest season in its history. With new highs in ratings and attendance, the league is looking to capitalize off its success a slate of changes was announced.

Before the tip-off of the WNBA finals on Thursday commissioner Cathy Englebert announced three major changes that will take place in the 2025 season.

One of the changes that will affect the regular season is that teams will now play 44 games instead of 40.

In 2023, the WNBA switched to a 40-game schedule and now just two seasons later, they’re adding four more games.

An increasing in revenue is an easy thing to blame this switch on but overall this will be a good move for the league and its fans.

Postseason play is ever-changing in the WNBA and it will switch once again when the 2025 WNBA playoffs tip off next year.

Following a switch up of the one-game first round just a short time ago, the W will now alter the way it’s three-game first-round series is run.

Rather than a 2-1 format where the top seed plays the first two games at home, the league will now go by a 1-1-1 format.

Whichever team is the higher seed will get Game One and a potential Game Three at home while the lower seed will get Game Two on their home floor.

This change now guarantees each playoff team a home game in the first round, something that hasn’t happened in recent years in the WNBA.

A switch in the first-round format could allow for more Game Three’s in the first round and will certainly generate more revenue for the league.

Not only is the first round getting an upgrade but the WNBA finals will also receive a makeover as the league announced it will switch to a best-of-seven finals series.

Much like other sports feature all throughout their playoffs, the W will now see more playoff games and more importantly more finals games.
