Wings Get Back Sabally, Seigrist, Brown But Lose Sims, Billings
The flurry of roster moves that we expected the Dallas Wings to make before the second half of the season came to fruition on Wednesday morning.
Dallas announced that Satou Sabally, Maddy Seigrist, and Jaelyn Brown have all been medically cleared and will return to the active roster within the first week of the second half of the season.
Satou Sabally and Jaelyn Brown are both expected to suit up for this Friday’s contest against the Connecticut Sun at the College Park Center.
Maddy Seigrist will not play on Friday but will return in the Wings following contest when they travel to New York to take on the Liberty on August 20th.
Odyssey Sims and Monique Billings who were on hardship contracts have both been released in order to make room for the three returning players per WNBA policy.
Both players are now free to sign with any WNBA team other than the Wings. Per league rules, Dallas has to wait ten days if they wish to attempt to resign either Sims or Billings.
There is no doubt that the Wings would love to resign Odyssey Sims if they get the chance. Sims averaged 17.2 points and 5.6 assists in her nine-game stint with Dallas.
Resigning Sims would require a trade from the Wings in order to clear a roster spot if she is still available when the ten-day period is up.
Expect all other 11 teams across the league to be chomping at the bit for a chance to sign a player like Sims.
As for Monique Billings, her tenure with the Wings started out really strong but she saw her minutes dwindle as the year went on. Billings still averaged a solid 8.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game including nine of her 24 games in double figures.
Even if the Wings did have to lose two key contributors, the talent that they are getting back puts them in a prime position to push for a playoff spot down the stretch.
Satou Sabally finished 5th in WNBA MVP voting last season after averaging career highs in points (18.6) and rebounds (8.1) and assists (4.4). During the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sabally lead Germany to a quarterfinal berth after scoring 18.8 points per game.
Maddy Seigrist was looking like a strong most improved player candidate before going down with injury. Seigrist averaged 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds while starting 11 of 13 games.
It’s unclear what kind of role Jaelyn Brown will have with the Wings but it’s clear there is belief she will be a solid contributor. Brown will play just her second WNBA game on Friday after going down with a nasal injury and illness following the season opener against the Chicago Sky.
Entering the second half, the Wings sit at just 6-19 but are only 4.5 games back of the final playoff spot.
Luckily for Dallas, they’re getting back the type of players who can help you make up that deficit.
