Will Mike Tomlin Be Returning To The Pittsburgh Steelers?

The time has come once again where the question surrounding Mike Tomlin’s career with the Pittsburgh Steelers will come into play.

Typically, a coach that leads his team to a winning record each year while being a staple in the postseason is safe. That has been the case with Tomlin but could that change this year?

Tomlin was brought to Pittsburgh ahead of the 2007 season. In year two, he led the Steelers to a Super Bowl title before returning just two years later. That would be the last time the team made a run to the final game.

In 18 years, Tomlin has not had a losing record as a head coach, which is one of the more phenomenal statistics around the league. He is 183-107 in his career in Pittsburgh with eight playoff victories. After a 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, fans in Pittsburgh are beginning to get impatient.

The Steelers have not won a postseason game since 2016. He has lost his last five postseason games as each season is beginning to take on the same format year after year.

Pittsburgh typically gets off to a quick start before fading away midseason and eventually being knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. This has proven to be maintainable but this is one of the proudest franchises in football. The Steelers have a history of winning championships and in recent years, that has not been the standard.

Pittsburgh has displayed a mediocre offense while struggling to find the next great quarterback following Ben Roethlisberger. The defense continues to be a strength but the lack of offensive prowess has held this team back in the new-aged NFL.

The Steelers are not a franchise that likes to change coaches. Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher were able to retire on their own terms after incredible successful careers. The thought around Tomlin has been the same but that could change as the noise gets louder and louder after another postseason loss.

There have been talks about a potential trade with many jobs being open but Pittsburgh would ask for a lot back for the job of its head coach. This is hard to imagine as it does not happen much around the league.

Tomlin has been extremely successful in Pittsburgh and will now look to find a new option under center. Until then, the Steelers are not a Super Bowl contender but Tomlin has shown that he can continue to make the postseason.
