Why The Washington Commanders Remain The Best Available Situation This Offseason
The new path for the Washington Commanders began last year and it is expected to continue in a big way this offseason.
A group led by Josh Harris bought the team last July and came into the year with big hopes for the future. There was not much time to do much internally with the team being sold so close to the season but the biggest checkmark was done — get Dan Snyder out of the door.
After a 4-13 season, the Commanders will hold the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and will have nearly $90 million in cap space. Washington will be looking for a new head coach, General Manager, and Head of Football Operations. For all three positions, this organization is now extremely desirable for many reasons.
Ron Rivera was let go on Monday morning. Harris brought in former executive of the Golden State Warriors Bob Myers and longtime Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman to lead the search for the new regime in the front office and on the sideline. They have wasted no time requesting interviews for the likes of Ben Johnson and Raheem Morris. Myers has also reached out to Jim Harbaugh’s agent to gauge his interest.
Ian Cunningham is also near the top of the list for Washington in terms of next President. Many look at the Commanders in a poor light and wonder why it is a desirable spot. The answers are clear.
First and foremost, there is a new sense of leadership beginning with Harris. He has a history of changing cultures with teams he owns, including the Philadelphia 76ers. Harris has shown in the past that he is not going to get in the way. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Harris brought in Myers and Spielman to lead this search this offseason, trusting longtime professionals to make the right moves for his team.
Second, we move on the field. The new front office members and head coach will have a chance to rebuild the team with the No. 2 pick in the draft, five picks in the Top 100, and the most cap space in the league. The second-overall pick in the draft means that a new coach could select his next quarterback or potentially get a game-changing talent in Marvin Harrison Jr.
Most importantly, the new regime will not have to worry about working under the cloud of Snyder or any of his hired friends, including the debacle that was Bruce Allen.
The Commanders have been busy right away on the Monday after the end of the regular season and that is to be expected over the course of the next few weeks or so. It is going to be a long process to find the next group that will lead this team into the 2024-25 season but brighter days seem to be ahead for fans. This was the case once Harris purchased the team.
Now that the regular season has ended, fans can begin to look forward to what lies ahead for their Commanders.
