Why Is No One Talking About Jose Urena?
If you talk to many Texas Rangers fans, they will tell you that the team needs to resign Kirby Yates, David Robertson, and Jose Leclerc to revamp their bullpen.
External sources such as Tanner Scott, and Blake Treinen amongst others are also very popular with Rangers fans.
However, one name who doesn’t seem to be very popular pitched right here in Arlington during the 2024 season.
Jose Urena pitched 109 innings for the Rangers in 2024 and posted just a 3.80 ERA through 33 appearances (9 starts).
Once again, Uerna is on the open market this winter and will not cost much after the $1.75 million contract he signed last offseason.
With the Rangers looking to keep the team below the luxury tax this winter, Urena could be a solid, cheap option for revamping the bullpen.
Ideally, Urena wouldn’t pitch 109 innings with the Rangers this season as Dane Dunning and Jon Gray figured to pencil into the “swing men role”.
However, if you know anything about Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young, it’s that he can never have enough pitching.
The Rangers will still need to add 2 to 3 other leverage relievers even if they decide to bring Urena back.
With MLB’s Winter Meetings coming up next week in Dallas, the Rangers could be seeking upgrades soon.
Last year at the Winter Meetings, the Rangers signed Kirby Yates during Bruce Bochy’s live interview with MLB Network during the Meetings in San Deigo.
Lightning could possibly strike twice as Bochy as are the Rangers are interested in bringing Yates back.
There is no doubt that Chris Young and Ross Fenstermaker will have a lot of their hands this week and the bullpen will be top of mind.
