Who Will Fill Out The Back End Of The Rangers Bullpen?
The Texas Rangers offseason has been a huge success up to this point.
After countless conversations about how much Rangers’ ownership would spend, Texas has spent over $135 million on free-agent contracts.
Bringing back Nathan Eovaldi, signing Joc Pederson, and the countless bullpen arms have been huge upgrades for a Rangers team that needed some improving.
However, the heavy lifting isn’t over for the Texas Rangers front office.
The most important pieces of the bullpen remain unsolved, giving Texas just over a month to solve them before Spring Training.
With that being said, who are some likely candidates to fill out the back end of the Rangers bullpen? Let’s break it down.
From the beginning of the offseason, we knew that Bruce Bochy and Chris Young alike wanted and still want to bring Kirby Yates back.
Yates has no shortage of suitors after an All-Star season in which he put up a 1.17 ERA in 61.2 IP.
At this point in the offseason, it’s pretty safe to assume that resigning Yates is their number one priority.
Padres closer Tanner Scott is also available but after being labeled the best reliever in baseball over the last few seasons by many advanced metrics, this price tag may be one the Rangers aren’t willing to reach for.
If the Rangers can’t land either of the two big fish in the closer market, they will have to reach into the lower tier which features guys like Carlos Estevez or Kenley Jansen.
Not only will Texas need to add a closer, they will have to add an 8th-inning guy with David Robertson being a current free agent.
Arlington native Chris Martin seems like the most likely candidate after the Rangers have had a least one in-person meeting with him this offseason.
Martin pitched for the Rangers in 2018 and part of 2019 before they sent him to the Braves in exchange for Kolby Allard.
Last season with the Boston Red Sox, Martin had a 3.45 ERA in 44.1 IP. In 2023, Martin posted a 1.05 ERA in 51 innings.
If it’s not Martin, then lefty and fellow Texas native A.J. Minter is someone who the Rangers have expressed interest in this offseason.
Minter put up a strong 2.62 ERA in 34.1 IP with the Atlanta Braves last season. He hits the open market after 8 seasons with Atlanta.
