Who Is Weston Wilson And How Did He Make Phillies History Last Night?

Even if you’re an avid baseball fan, chances are you don’t know who Weston Wilson is… that is until last night.

Only two Phillies have ever hit for the cycle at Citizens Bank Park, David Bell did it in 2004 and now, 20 years later rookie Weston Wilson has done it.

Wilson became the first Philidelphia rookie to hit for the cycle and the second rookie in the MLB to accomplish the feat this season joining Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford who did it on June 30th in Baltimore.

After 2,836 plate appearances across seven seasons in the minor leagues, Weston Wilson finally has his huge big-league moment.

Philadelphia had the game well in hand as they jumped out to a huge lead in route to a 13-3 victory over the Washington Nationals but Weston Wilson’s ninth-inning at-bat was one that every fan in Citizens Bank Park was glued to Wilson’s eighth inning at bat.

Up by 8 runs, Wilson stepped to the plate needing just a double to complete the cycle.

[Bryce] “Harper was at the top stop letting me know,” Wilson said, laughing. “If you hit it, keep running. Don’t stop until second.”

That is exactly what Wilson did as he smacked a ball into the right-center field gap off the glove of Alex Call who attempted to make a diving play but fell just short allowing Wilson to hit for the cycle.

“It’s honestly kind of a blur to me right now,” Wilson said after the game. “I’m just trying to process everything.”

“I think it’s a testament to perseverance, staying with everything about the long journey to this historic moment. “It hasn’t been easy, but last year against them was my first game. To have that moment last year and this one, it’s really cool.”

Wilson homered in his first MLB game against the Nationals last season but it fell on the same night as Micahel Lorenzen’s no-hitter.

Last night, the spotlight was all Wilson’s and he sure made the most of it.

“He can run the bases, he can steal a base. He’s got a lot of qualities,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

Don’t be surprised if you see more of Weston Wilson for the NL East leading Phillies as the season goes on.
