Where Could The Rangers Tap Into The Free Agent Closer Market

The Texas Rangers aren’t exactly aggressively shopping relievers anymore for their near-complete bullpen makeover.

After bringing in Chris Martin, Holby Milner, Jacob Webb, Shawn Armstrong, and Robert Garcia, the Rangers will have a plethora of options coming out of the pen this season. One thing that the group lacks however is a proven 9th inning closer.

Rangers President Of Baseball Operations Chris Young and GM Ross Fenstermaker said the team is open to adding a closer but are confident in the bullpen they have assembled.

Much of the factor to determine if Texas will add a closer or not will determine on what the market looks like.

Earlier this week, Rangers All-Star closer Kirby Yates signed with the defending world-champion Los Angeles Dodgers after Texas did not make him a formal offer.

However, there are still plenty of fish out there on the closer market. Let’s break down what options the Rangers could have if they decide to add a 9th-inning guy.

RHP Carlos Estevez – After having 57 saves in the last two seasons, Carlos Estevez is one of the better 9th-inning arms in the game.

With many teams still needing bullpen help, Estevez’s market may never end up coming down to a point where the Rangers feel like they can hop in.

However, if Texas does decide they want and need a 9th-inning guy, there is no better option left than Estevez.

RHP Kenley Jansen – After having success with one 37-year-old veteran reliever, why not try another one?

Kenley Jansen is on a Hall Of Fame trajectory and the Rangers would certainly be a fit for what could be one of the last stops of his tour.

Last season with the Red Sox, Jansen recorded 27 saves and a 3.29 ERA in 54.2 innings pitched.

RHP David Robertson – Kirby Yates may not have opted to return to Texas but why not bring David Robertson back for one more season?

Robertson had the third-best WAR of any free-agent reliever last season after putting up a 3.00 ERA in 72 innings.

Bruce Bochy obviously has the full trust of Robertson and if you can get him at the right price, there is no doubt he would be one of the most experienced closers you can get.

Nowhere – It’s important to note that ultimately, the Rangers will likely roll into 2025 with the current rotation that they have.

Bochy will likely have to use a “closer by committee” strategy and see who takes the job and runs with it.

Names to watch for early on are Chris Martin, Shawn Armstrong, and Robert Garcia who was acquired for the Nationals from Nathaniel Lowe.

Martin would be the most experienced of the options having pitched nearly 350 innings despite having never consistently closed games.
