What Would It Take For The Washington Commanders To Acquire Brandon Aiyuk?

Over the last few weeks, the NFL universe has been throwing rumors around involving Brandon Aiyuk and the Washington Commanders.

The current San Francisco 49er receiver has been seen with new Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels on multiple occasions amid trade rumors. The Niners and Aiyuk have been unable to come to terms on a long-term contract extension, which has sparked trade rumors.

Washington made Daniels the second-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was a freshman at Arizona State while Aiyuk was a senior and on his way to the NFL.

Aiyuk is coming off a season where he totaled 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. This marks the second consecutive year where he eclipsed 75 catches and 1,000 yards. On the other side for Washington, Terry McLaurin has reached these numbers in four consecutive years. He is one of four receivers to accomplish this feat. Pairing the two on the outside would give Daniels plenty of options to work with on the outside.

Brandon Aiyuk To Washington Trade Proposal

It is unknown if new Commanders’ General Manager Adam Peters will pursue a trade. Peters got to know Aiyuk during his time in San Francisco and it is clear that Daniels has a connection with the receiver.

This is what a potential trade could look like:

Washington Commanders receive: WR Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers receive: WR Dyami Brown, 2024 2nd-Round Pick, 2024 5th-Round Pick

The Niners do not have much leverage here. Of course, they can opt to sign the receiver but it seems as if the two sides are far off. Any team that trades for Aiyuk will likely have to sign the 26-year-old to a long-term deal. This could be in the neighborhood of $27-$30 million per year. For reference, the Minnesota Vikings and Justin Jefferson agreed on a four-year, $140 million extension. This comes out to $35 million annually and Aiyuk will not reach these numbers.

The allure of Aiyuk for Washington should be adding another elite receiver with McLaurin. This would move Jahan Dotson to the slot and allow rookie Luke McCaffrey to get his bearings at the next level.

The Commanders are an up-and-coming team with Daniels under center and Peters running the show in the front office. It is important for the team to continue to add players that can help, not just in the future, but right away. Aiyuk is among that list and his connection with Daniels would bring an intriguing duo to the Nation’s Capital.
