What is on the Blue Jays Christmas List?
With MLB Free Agency in full swing, it feels like Christmas has come early for baseball fans. There have already been a few signings with some big and some small, but most of the big-ticket presents are still waiting under the tree. For the Toronto Blue Jays, their wish list is growing. After the departure of Jordan Romano and uncertainty surrounding Bo Bichette’s contract, the Jays are in desperate need of a holiday miracle. If they hope to stay competitive in the AL East, they’ll need to make a big splash soon. This year, the best way to spread Blue Jays Christmas cheer might just be spending big to upgrade their roster.
Toronto was one of the biggest landing spots for star outfielder, Juan Soto. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays were not able to land Soto, as he inked a 15-year, $765M deal with the New York Mets. With this deal, the Jays look to pivot elsewhere. Fortunately for Toronto, most of the big name players are still available, and the Jays are reportedly interested in many of them.
There are 3 players that the Blue Jays have had noted interest in. These 3 players should be at the top of any Blue Jays fans’ Christmas list, along with a few stocking stuffers following right after.
Anthony Santander – OF
Santander is the perfect player for the Blue Jays; a 40 HR, 100 RBI switch-hitting outfielder, who just had a career year out of Baltimore. Toronto has been reported to love the player and look to pursue him this offseason, so we know there is mutual interest on both sides.
Other clubs like Boston and New York are interested in Santander’s services as well. The switch-hitting slugger will garner a lot of interest in this free agent market, so hopefully the Blue Jays are able to lock him into a contract to play for the blue and white.
Projected Contract: Six years, $145M
Corbin Burnes – SP
Burnes is one of the top pitchers in all of the MLB. As an Oriole last season, Burnes pitched to a 15-9 record, with a 2.92ERA, with 181 strikeouts. With a six-pitch arsenal, Burnes can be effective in many situations. As a former Cy Young winner, Burnes would bolster Toronto’s rotation, provide playoff experience, and enhance their championship aspirations in a competitive AL East division.
The San Francisco Giants are another team who are frontrunners to acquire Burnes, as they have been heavily involved in this years’ free agent market. Both teams can utilize Burnes as their ace in their rotation. It will be a bidding war for teams to acquire Burnes this offseason.
Projected Contract: Six years, $220M
Teoscar Hernandez – OF
Many Blue Jays fans are hoping for this return. Last year with the Dodgers, Teoscar batted .272/.339/.501 with 33HR and 99RBI, safe to say he hit for one of his best seasons in his career. He did however mark his second-highest strikeout total, with 188 total strikeouts. Regardless, we know Teoscar is a great power hitter that the Blue Jays need in this contact hitting lineup.
Teoscar is one of the outfielders that many teams are interested in. Los Angeles, Boston, New York should all be teams that are fighting to sign Teoscar. As a former Blue Jay, expect Toronto to fight to sign the slugger and bring him back to Toronto.
Projected Contract: Five years, $105M
Stocking Stuffer #1 – A Vlad Guerrero Jr Extension
The burning question in Toronto Baseball is when (or if) an extension for Guerrero is coming. As the face of the Blue Jays, Guerrero slashed .288/.363/.500 in his career so far with the Jays, knocking out 160HR, and 507RBIs. Guerrero has been an all-star in each of the past four seasons, showing that he is the man to represent Toronto Baseball.
In 2026, Guerrero will be a free agent. He is in his last year of arbitration, management needs to show its players, and potential free agents that this management will commit long term to their players. Toronto should get an extension done before Spring Training, to avoid any conflict in contract negotiations.
Stocking Stuffer #2 – A Formidable Bullpen
Year in and year out, there’s a big problem with this ball club. Over the last few years, the bullpen has been very inconsistent. One of the biggest things the Jays need is a strong bullpen if they truly want to compete in the postseason. You can’t have your relievers blow meaningful games when your starters perform well. They already went out and got Nick Sandlin in the Horwitz trade, and they’ve (re)signed Yimi Garcia, while also losing Jordan Romano.
The Blue Jays need strong relievers in the back-end of their bullpen to close out games. With some relievers still on the market, the Jays can find a diamond in the rough either through free agency or the trade market.
With Christmas right around the corner, and the Blue Jays heavily involved in this years’ free agent class, the wishlist for Toronto is long, and filled with talent. We can only hope that Blue Jays management will spend the money this winter so Jays fans around the world can be happy this Christmas with the ball club that hopes to make a postseason push next season.
