What Does The Rangers Rotation Look Like?
The Texas Rangers have finished their Christmas shopping early when it comes to the starting pitching side of things.
Outside of Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki, the Rangers are finished building their starting rotation.
President Of Baseball Operations Chris Young confirmed the news on the final day of the MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas.
It was a busy week for the Rangers right in their backyard as they resigned Nathan Eovaldi, brought in RHP Jacob Webb, and traded for Marlins slugger Jake Burger.
With Nathan Eovaldi back and the rotation practically complete, let’s break down what it looks like.
The Aces – Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi
Resigning Eovaldi will pair him with deGrom at the top of the Rangers rotation creating one of the best 1-2 punches in all of baseball.
In just three starts in 2024, deGrom had a 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched. With a full offseason in front of him, deGrom is poised to bounce back strong in 2025.
Eovaldi’s return takes the Rangers’ rotation from good to elite. After two strong seasons, Texas brought back Eovaldi on a three-year $75 million deal.
Solidified Starters – Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford
It’s a little bit interesting to put Cody Bradford in a category as a solidified starter but the way he pitched last year says otherwise.
Bradford had a 3.64 ERA in just 14 games last season. In 13 starts hitters hit just.209 against the Rangers lefty.
Tyler Mahle returns to the rotation for the final season of his contract after recovering from Tommy John surgery last season. In just three starts Mahle had a 4.97 ERA
Much like deGrom, with Mahle having a full offseason in front of him bounceback could be looming for him as well.
The Battle for the 5th starter – Jon Gray, Dane Dunning, Kumar Rocker, Jack Leiter
Last season at Spring Training, we saw Cody Bradford grab the fifth starter spot and have a strong season.
This year, an interesting group will have the chance to do the same thing in a strong Rangers rotation.
Gray and Dunning both have the ability to pitch out of the bullpen as swingmen if they don’t earn a spot in the rotation.
Leiter and Rocker will not be featured out of the bullpen as they will be in AAA if neither makes the rotation.
Rocker had a strong showing in three starts at the end of the season last year finishing with a 3.64 ERA.
Leiter on the other hand did not have the same luck in 9 games as both a starter and reliever finishing with an ERA of 8.83.
