What Does Josh Smith’s 2025 Role Look Like?

In 2024, almost every single Texas Rangers offensive player underperformed in some way shape, or form.

One, if not the only one that didn’t was who Bruce Bochy referred to as “Swiss army knife” utility man Josh Smith.

After never having played more than 100 games during his first two seasons, Smith burst onto the scene in 149 games played.

Smith slashed .258/.337/.394 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI all of which being career-high totals.

Flash forward to 2025 and all of the Rangers roster comes into Spring Training fully healthy as the club looks to return to the postseason.

Saturday morning at Fan Fest, Rangers President Of Baseball Operations Chris Young shed some light on what Josh Smith’s role could look like this season.

Young said that Smith’s best role is as the “super utility” player. If Smith can succeed in this role, it should get guys like Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, Marcus Semien, and others some needed days off throughout the season.

According to Young, Smith will be seeing a lot of playing time despite being in a utility role. The newly extended front office guru said Smith can get into the lineup “4,5 or maybe even 6 days a week”.

One of those ways of getting into the lineup could be one that we have never seen from Smith before in three big league seasons.

Multiple times at Fan Fest, Chris Young mentioned that Smith could possibly see some time in center field.

After holding down the position for the better part of three years, Leody Taveras’ time in center is now in jeopardy.

Evan Carter is the Rangers’ ideal center fielder but he has played just 68 games in the big leagues, most of which being in left.

Smith no doubt has the glove to play center, as he has shown off a strong defensive presence in his short time in left field.

No matter which way you slice it up, Josh Smith will be a key contributor to the 2025 Texas Rangers.

If Smith is anywhere near what he did in 2024, the already scary-looking Texas Rangers offense looks that much better.
