What Does Bo Bichette’s Future Look Like In Toronto?
The Blue Jays announced on September 19th that Bo Bichette fractured his right middle finger during his return from a calf injury, in the Jays 13-8 loss against the Texas Rangers. With this news, it meant that Bichetteās 2024 season with the Blue Jays was officially over.
āHe was frustrated,ā manager John Schneider said, ābut I do think heās in a pretty good place in terms of perspective and things like that. He was obviously frustrated, but [he] knows something positive will come out of this. Thatās what weāre hoping for.ā
In an unfortunate season for Bichette, we know that there are rumors of Bichette wanting out of Toronto, and not returning for the 2025 season. Letās take a look at different facts, statistics, and possible outcomes that can affect his 2025 season, wherever that may be.
Bo Bichette With the Toronto Blue Jays
Bichette, 26, has spent his entire major league career thus far with the Toronto Blue Jays. Officially debuting in 2019, Bichette has totaled 93HR, 343RBI, with a .290/.322/.466 slashline. All things considered, those arenāt bad numbers by any margin.
The most important thing however, is postseason success. Team wise, they havenāt had nearly as much success as they had in the mid-2010s, when Bautista, Donaldson & company were on the team. Bichette also has had little success in his own right, only competing in 6 postseason games in his 5 year career with the Jays, not hitting a home run and only tallying 1 RBI. Bichette has been a great competitor in regular season games, with clutch plays and some highlighted defensive moments, but in the end Bichette could not contribute in the postseason.
Bo Bichette On the Open Market
A strong shortstop always commands top dollar in free agency. Look at Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Trea Turner for example. The amount of money teams will pay for a talented shortstop is unlike anything else. Bo Bichette compares well with those players, and should fetch just about as much as those players would. Bichette does have another year on his contract with Toronto, so if the Jays are confident he won;t resign in the 2025 offseason, then it should be heavily talked about to trade the star shortstop.
A strong comparable contract would be what Dansby Swanson signed in Chicago. Seven years, $177M, with an average salary of about $26M per season. That would leave Bichette tied for sixth in the top 10 highest paid shortstop list.
In the end, all Jays fans should hope that Bichette will sign long term with the team, as he is a quality shortstop and a player that any team would love to employ. Bichette has one year remaining on his current contract, then he would become a free agent. Toronto still needs to re-sign Guerrero Jr, as well as finding strong supporting pieces to bring this team back into the postseason. Bichette and Toronto have a long offseason ahead of them, and we know Bichette will try to maximize his financial earnings.
