We’re Number 2: Cleveland Guardians Own Second Seed, Lose to Houston Astros 5-2
The Cleveland Guardians can just play baseball for the fun of it this weekend.
For the first time all season, nothing will be on the line.
That’s because the New York Yankees clinched the top spot in the American League playoffs with Cleveland’s 5-2 loss to Houston.
It was Progressive Night at the ballpark, as 9,000 of the insurance company’s employees were part of the sellout crowd of 34,149. Flo threw out the first pitch.
Cleveland enjoyed its 14th sellout and attracted 2 million fans for the first time since the 2017 season.
NOT JOEY’S NIGHT
Joey Cantillo (2-4) couldn’t maintain his streak of strong pitching performances. Alex Bregman started Houston’s scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Cantillo’s wild pitch scored Grae Kessinger in the fourth, and the Astros increased the lead to 3-0 when Kyle Tucker singled to score Jose Altuve.
FANS: “Booooooooooooo …”
Oh, wait. Did the Cleveland fans remember that Altuve was part of the Houston team that stole the 2017 World Series? They did!
Eli Morgan relieved Cantillo but gave up back-to-back jacks to Victor Caratini and Zach Dezenzo.
PINCH-HITTING PARADE
The Guardians never give up, and they scored twice in the ninth by using four pinch-hitters in a row.
All-Star David Fry doubled to score Josh Naylor, and Angel Martinez grounded out to bring home Lane Thomas.
Congratulations to Onion for winning the hot dog races for the season. Mustard still hasn’t won a race after all of his wins were overturned in his own cheating scandal earlier in the year.
Justin Verlander, age 41, will take the mound tonight for the Astros, looking for career win No. 262. Ben Lively (13-9) will throw the first pitch for the Guardians at 6:10.
