Who Will Be King👑: NFC North Free Agency Grades – Best & Worst

Welcome to another episode of Who Will Be King👑, the Fans First Sports Network’s NFC North roundup show. In this episode, our hosts June and Foster from the Bleachers To Speakers [Lions] podcast, Pay, host of Da Bear Claw Podcast, and Dave Stefano, from Vikings 1st & SKOL, delve deep into the recent free agency frenzy that has significantly stirred the division, touching on their respective team’s biggest disappointments, pleasant surprises, and how it might impact the highly anticipated upcoming draft.

June Sets the Stage
Our host, June, kicked things off with her trademark enthusiasm, welcoming everyone to the latest episode of Bleachers and Speakers. “This is my favorite day of the week,” she announced. “We get to sit down and talk NFC North division football. Even in the off season, the shows are just as good as they are during the season.”

Vikings’ Free Agency Moves: A Fresh Start with Dave
Dave Stefano, the producer over at Vikings 1st & SKOL, was first to the mic, offering some fascinating insights into the Vikings’ new direction, particularly their approach to the quarterback position. “Hey everybody. I’m Dave. We’ve been busy over in Eagan, [at the Vikings headquarters]” Dave shared. “We’ve signed Sam Darnold, the former number three overall pick quarterback. He will be our starter to start the season, most likely.”

Dave also underlined the team’s growth and its impact on the Fans First Sports Network, “Vikings 1st & SKOL has been up just a little over a year. We are growing. We appreciate that.”

The Bears’ Offseason Saga: Pay’s Pessimistic Perspective
Next up was Pay, the host of Da Bear Claw Podcast. Pay didn’t shy away from expressing his dissatisfaction with the Bears’ offseason moves, specifically the controversial Justin Fields deal. Pay shared, “I fully expect these moves. The acquisition of DeAndre Swift, Jonathan Owens, Keenan Allen, and various others. I expect the Bears to be a better on-field product going into next season because of these acquisitions.”

He added, “Get your bears and NC North news, updates, and just general chit chat. Check us out.”

Discussing the Free Agency Frenzy
With the team updates out of the way, the conversation turned to the recent free agency activities. Each host offered in-depth analysis of their team’s acquisitions and the expected impact on the upcoming season. From the Vikings’ drastic roster changes to the Bears’ somewhat controversial moves and the Lions’ strategic acquisitions, each team had a unique and eventful offseason.

Dave expressed excitement about the Vikings’ new additions, saying, “I think addition by subtraction helps the Minnesota Vikings because [Kirk Cousins] is gone. The six-year experiment is over.”

On the other hand, Pay was more critical of the Bears’ free agency moves, stating, “We improved our wide receiver room. We improved our secondary. Now iron’s hot, hopefully in the draft and shore up some other holes.”

Finally, Foster shared his thoughts on the Lions’ offseason, noting, “We covered ourselves in a sense that we can now draft freely with just, you know, what’s the best available player.”

Unpacking Free Agency Disappointments and Surprises
Foster initiated the dialogue by expressing his disappointment with the Lions’ approach to free agency. He felt that the organization could have been more aggressive in addressing certain positions. “I would have liked for us to have addressed edge rusher a little bit stronger,” he stated. Foster was particularly critical about the signing of Marcus Davenport, stating “I would mark it as incomplete just because he didn’t play most of last year.”

June, another Lions advocate, chimed in with his thoughts. He echoed Foster’s disappointment with the Lions’ apparent lack of aggression. “The Lions need to be more aggressive in pursuing a defensive end,” he asserted. June also expressed his disillusionment with the franchise tags, pointing out that there were two corners he thought could have been snagged during free agency, but unfortunately weren’t.

Evaluating Free Agency Grades
When the conversation shifted to grading their respective teams’ free agency moves, the hosts provided a diverse range of responses. Pay, representing the Bears, gave his team a C. He cited the trading away of Justin [Fields] as a significant disappointment that negatively impacted their grade.

Dave, a Vikings pundit, graded his team higher with a score ranging from a high-C to a mid-B. He highlighted the replacements of key starters, such as Kirk Cousins and Danielle Hunter, as positive moves. He also commended the acquisition of Aaron Jones and Sam Darnold, seeing these as significant improvements.

Foster and June, both evaluating the Lions, had slightly different perspectives. Foster gave the Lions a B minus, citing the signings of D.J. Reader and Kevin Zeitler as strong moves that positively influenced the grade. June was a little more critical, grading the Lions with a C-plus. He voiced her concern about the team’s tendency to sign injured players but acknowledged that recent acquisitions had boosted the grade.

Draft Predictions Shaped by Free Agency
Looking ahead to the draft, the hosts shared their thoughts on how free agency might influence their teams’ draft strategies. Pay suggested that the Bears might be looking to draft an edge due to their recent moves. He indicated that such a pick would significantly improve his offseason grade for the team.

Dave predicted that the Vikings would seek to trade up to secure a quarterback, seeing this as a vital need for the team. He mentioned Drake May and J.J. McCarthy as the top targets. He also emphasized that the Vikings’ final choice would highly depend on the team’s position in the draft order.

Lions’ Strategy on Draft Day
The conversation got off to a riveting start as Foster dove into the topic of the Detroit Lions’ recent acquisition and how it might impact their strategy on draft day. Expressing his thoughts on the tricky situation, Foster suggested that the team currently has a balanced chance between opting for an edge rusher and a cornerback.

“I feel like it’s a 50 50 between edge rushing and cornerback as of right now. I would have leaned more so, more so towards edge rushing,” he explained. However, he also acknowledged the potential impact of the Cam Sutton situation, which could still sway the Lions towards securing the best available cornerback. This insight sparked a lively debate among the hosts, highlighting the unpredictability of the draft process.

A Potential Dark Horse?
In a surprising revelation, Foster proposed a potential dark horse strategy for the Lions. He voiced his expectation that the Lions might go after the best available wide receiver in the draft. Considering the current roster of the Lions, he underscored the potential of several tall receivers who can stretch the field.

“I think the Dark Horse is going out and getting the best available quiet receiver that’s available at 29,” Foster speculated, adding a new dimension to the conversation and opening the floor for further discussions on the Lions’ draft strategy.

The Impact of the Cam Sutton Situation
June, another seasoned analyst of the game, added another layer to the conversation by discussing the implications of Cam Sutton’s legal issues on the Lions’ draft strategy. He emphasized that, despite the recent acquisitions, the team still needs to address their requirements for a corner and rush.

June remarked, “If something goes wrong there, you need another corner.” This statement underscored the delicate balance of the team’s current situation and the potential consequences of the ongoing legal issues.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported on USA Today that, “The Detroit Lions released cornerback Cam Sutton on Thursday, one day after they learned there was a warrant out for his arrest on one count of domestic battery by strangulation.”

The Green Bay Packers’ Draft Strategy
In a light-hearted yet insightful segment, the hosts each named players they wouldn’t want to see drafted by the Green Bay Packers. The name ‘Latu’ came up repeatedly, with Foster stating, “Probably Latu amongst the realistic.” Dave echoed these sentiments, adding, “both the fine gentlemen that you just mentioned and we’ve done profiles on them as well are very good edge rushers, and no, I don’t want to see those edge rushers in Green Bay.”

Wrapping Up with Final Thoughts
As the conversation concluded, the hosts remained optimistic about the direction their teams were heading, despite some free agency disappointments. “Things are looking pretty good for the long term and the short term for us,” Foster concluded, summarizing the sentiments of the group.
