The Sam Darnold Reclamation Project Continues – Week 3
Good Morning, Vikings Fans!
Good morning, everyone. I hope you have your coffee ready. Welcome to another edition of the Vikings Daily Opener with me, Dave Stefano! This show is brought to you by Vikings 1st & SKOL in partnership with the Fans First Sports Network. Today, 23 September, 2024, we’re diving into the remarkable Sam Darnold Reclamation Project once again.
Sam Darnold Shines in Week 3
Sam Darnold has continued to impress. In week three of the NFL season, our Vikings quarterback put on a stellar performance, tying his career high with four touchdown passes and leading the Minnesota Vikings to a decisive 34-7 victory over the Houston Texans. This win not only solidified the Vikings’ undefeated start to the season but also further cemented Darnold’s role as a team leader.
Breaking Down the Stats
Let’s break down Darnold’s impressive stats for the game. He completed 17 of 28 passes for 181 yards, threw four touchdown passes with zero interceptions, achieved a passer rating of 119.2, and an ESPN QBR of 74.6. What’s truly remarkable is the trajectory of Darnold’s career. He entered the 2024 season with a career high of just 19 touchdown passes in a single season. Now, just after three games, he’s on pace for an astounding 45 touchdowns!
Coaching and Strategy
The dramatic improvement can be attributed to head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive scheme and tutelage, which is tailored to Darnold’s strengths. The game wasn’t without its scary moments, though. Darnold gave fans a brief scare when he left the game to have his left knee checked after a late hit by former Viking, Danielle Hunter. However, in a testament to his toughness and the faith his team has in him, Darnold returned just after one play to a thunderous ovation from the U.S. Bank Stadium crowd.
Today, fans will be anxiously awaiting the results of the Monday morning MRI to ensure there was no damage.
Darnold’s performance wasn’t just about the numbers. He showcased his ability to read defenses and make smart decisions. In one notable play, he recognized double coverage on star receiver Justin Jefferson and instead found Aaron Jones for a touchdown. This kind of decision-making and field awareness is exactly what the Vikings were hoping for when they signed Darnold in the offseason.
Locker Room Buzz
The impact of Darnold’s play extends beyond just the offense. Safety Harrison Smith was overheard telling Jefferson that the Vikings team, quote, “has a little something special.” Even J.J. McCarthy chimed in with, quote, “Sam Darnold is good at football.”

The energy and belief in the locker room are palpable, and much of it stems from Sam Darnold as quarterback.
Looking Ahead
As we look ahead, it’s clear that the Sam Darnold reclamation project is in full swing. He’s not just managing games; he’s winning them. With eight touchdown passes in his first three games as a Viking, a new career high for a three-game span, Darnold is leading the NFL in touchdown passes. He’s thriving in O’Connell’s offense and making a strong case for Comeback Player of the Year. And with some even whispering about MVP consideration, the Vikings are now 3-0 with a plus 55 point differential, having convincingly beaten formidable opponents like the 49ers and the Texans as they prepare for their upcoming rivalry game against the Packers at Lambeau Field. One thing is clear: Sam Darnold and these Vikings are for real, and they are here to contend.
