The NFL Scouting Combine Day 2 – Defensive Backs, Tight Ends, & Other Prospect News
Welcome back to another episode of The Real Forno Show, where your host Tyler Forness guides you through an in-depth breakdown and analysis of the NFL Scouting Combine. In this episode, we dive into the performances that stood out on day 2, specifically focusing on the defensive backs and tight ends.
The Fastest Group of Cornerbacks
The defensive backs group, particularly the cornerbacks, were the main highlight of the day. According to Tyler, this impressive group might have been the fastest he’s ever seen at the NFL scouting combine, with eight players running under a 4.4 40-yard dash.
Among them, Cam Hart and Kyree Jackson stood out. Despite their large frames, they demonstrated impressive speed. Cam Hart, one of Tyler’s favorites, ran a 4.5 flat. Standing at 6’3″ with 33-inch arms, Hart’s speed is likely to boost his prospects onto day two. Khyree Jackson, who is around the same height as Hart, also ran a 4.5, further solidifying his position in the draft.
Injuries That Marred Testing
Unfortunately, the day was not without its setbacks. A number of top prospects suffered injuries during testing. Nate Wiggins, a promising player who aimed to hit a 4.2 flat in the 40-yard dash, pulled a hamstring on his first attempt, but still ran it in 4.28 time. Tyler Owens, another potential star, appeared to strain his quad or groin during his sprint. These injuries could significantly impact their eventual draft stock.
Standout Performers
Despite the setbacks, there were numerous standout performances. Quinion Mitchell from Toledo and Max Melton from Rutgers received special mention for their athletic prowess. Mitchell, who has been consistently mocked to the Vikings over the last couple of months, ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash and achieved a 38-inch vertical leap. His performance at the combine could potentially guarantee him a first-round spot in the draft.
Max Melton, on the other hand, posted a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash, an 11’4″ in the broad jump, and a 40.5-inch vertical jump. This impressive display of athleticism, coupled with his physical and feisty play-style, could significantly increase his draft prospects.
The Alabama Corners
Tyler also discussed the Alabama cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry, along with Khyree Jackson from Oregon, and Cam Hart from Notre Dame, who both ran a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash. He noted that their times were slower than expected, which could potentially impact their draft prospects.
During the medical checks, Alabama cornerback, Kool-Aid McKinstry was diagnosed with a Jones Fracture and couldn’t test at the combine. Tyler emphasized that McKinstry’s performance at his pro day would be crucial in determining his potential as a top draft pick.
Tyler also speculates on their potential future in the NFL, considering their current performance and potential for growth.
Brock Bowers: The Debate for a Top 10 Pick
Switching gears to the tight ends, Brock Bowers is a name that has been on everyone’s lips. Despite some concerns about aspects of his game, Tyler delves into a debate on whether Bowers has the potential to be a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft.
Tyler discusses Bowers’ unique skill set, his potential for development, and how his skills could translate into the NFL. This segment offers a comprehensive look at Bowers and his potential future in the league.
