Purple & Gold 4 Days: Vikings’ Game Analysis – Missed Opportunities
In this episode of Purple & Gold 4 Days, Justin Day discusses the Minnesota Vikings’ recent loss to the Denver Broncos, despite a strong defensive effort. Justin criticizes the team’s turnover issues, particularly pointing to Alexander Mattison’s costly fumble. He also questions Head Coach Kevin O’Connell’s decision-making, especially regarding the continued use of Mattison as the primary running back. The episode further delves into the playoff outlook for the Vikings and the overall standings in the NFC North.
The NFC North Roundup
Day started the show by addressing the current situation in the NFC North. Despite the Vikings losing their recent game against the Denver Broncos, the season is far from over. The team remains in a strong position for a wild card spot, with some crucial games coming up. However, the division seems to be slipping away, with the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers showing strong performances. Regardless, Justin sees the upcoming Thanksgiving game between the Lions and the Packers as a win-win situation for the Vikings.
Defense: The Unsung Heroes
There’s been criticism about the Vikings’ defense, especially after their recent loss. However, Justin believes that the defense did its job. Despite the team’s three turnovers, the defense limited the Broncos to only nine points from these possessions. The defense also managed to stop the opposing team’s two-point conversion, keeping the Vikings in the game. Despite some defensive shortcomings, such as Mekhi Blackmon’s coverage, Day emphasizes that the defense played a crucial role in keeping the Vikings competitive.
The Alexander Mattison Dilemma
One of the key points of discussion was the role of Alexander Mattison, the Vikings’ running back. Justin questions why Mattison continues to be the starting running back when other options, like Ty Chandler, could potentially offer more on the field. While he acknowledges that Mattison is a good change-of-pace back, he believes it’s time to give other players a chance.
Turnovers: The Achilles Heel
A recurring issue for the Vikings this season has been turnovers. Justin points out that when the Vikings turn the ball over, they tend to lose, and when they don’t, they win. The recent game against the Broncos was a prime example of this, with the Vikings’ three turnovers playing a significant role in their loss.
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss to the Broncos, Justin remains optimistic about the Vikings’ future games. The Vikings still have a chance to make it to the playoffs and the upcoming games will be crucial in determining their fate. As Justin aptly puts it, “the season’s not over. In fact, it’s just getting started.”
