NFC North: Roars, Rebounds, Trades & Fails
In this action-packed episode of ‘Who Will Be King’, we dive deep into the latest happenings in the NFC North. Joining host Dave from the Minnesota Vikings ‘Vikings 1st & SKOL’ network are Pay from ‘Da Bear Claw’ Chicago Bears podcast, and June and Foster from Detroit Lions ‘Bleachers to Speakers’ podcast. This Fans First Sports Network production brings you comprehensive coverage of the Week 9 division results, trade deadline moves, the heated MVP race, and detailed previews of upcoming Week 10 matchups. From surprising trades to standout performances, this episode has everything an NFC North fan needs to stay informed and engaged.
Lions Weather the Storm at Lambeau
The Detroit Lions proved they’re not just a dome team with an impressive victory over the Green Bay Packers in challenging weather conditions. The game, played in pouring rain and sideways winds, tested both teams’ resilience and adaptability. As Foster noted: “It definitely affected Green Bay a lot more than it affected us. I mean, they have a lot of drops, bad snaps, um, et cetera, et cetera.”
The Lions’ ability to run the ball effectively and capitalize on Green Bay’s mistakes was crucial to their victory. June highlighted a pivotal moment in the game that shifted the momentum entirely in Detroit’s favor, “Jordan Love had a bunch of mis-snaps. The, the, the pick six he threw in the waning minutes of the half, uh, I think that really kind of put, shut the door on everything. I think it was over at that point. It was 10-3. He throws a pick six. Then you have 17-3 at half when it could have been 10-3, and then you have the Lions getting the ball in the second half, so huge momentum shift.”
This victory not only solidified the Lions’ position in the NFC North but also demonstrated their ability to perform in adverse conditions, a crucial skill for any team with playoff aspirations.
Bears’ Struggles Continue
The Chicago Bears faced another disappointing loss, this time to the Arizona Cardinals, a team that was perceived as a potential “get right” game for the struggling Bears. Pay expressed his frustration with the team’s performance, particularly their inability to capitalize on what should have been a favorable matchup:”We scored nine points against a terrible defensive team. And to make matters worse, our defense was all around bad too. The off, the defense, the rush defense gave up 200 yards on the ground.”
The poor performance has led to increased scrutiny of head coach Matt Eberflus and his staff. Pay voiced the growing sentiment among Bears fans for a change in leadership: “I didn’t get the news I was looking for yesterday. All of Chicago, we was looking for breaking news as we tuned in to WGN late, late yesterday. Maybe wake up and see some good news on WGN or, whatever news broadcast you watch. We was hoping to see, hey, Chicago Bears fired Eberflus and, you know, installed someone, anyone.”
When asked about potential replacements, Pay suggested a bold move that would not only strengthen the Bears but also weaken a division rival:
Ben Johnson, come on home.
This reference to the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator highlights the respect Johnson has garnered around the league and the desperation Bears fans feel for offensive innovation.
Vikings Bounce Back Against the Colts
Despite early setbacks, including some controversial officiating decisions, the Minnesota Vikings managed to secure a win against the Indianapolis Colts. Dave highlighted the team’s resilience and second-half dominance: “The Vikings came out in the second half and dominated. And, eventually won 21-13. Our defense played fantastic, only held them to six points, never let them in the red zone. It was a dominating performance. By Minnesota to get back on the horse and win.”
The game also showcased the continued excellence of wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who Dave noted “went off for 137 yards, 7 reception, now leads the NFL in receiving yards.” This performance underlines Jefferson’s importance to the Vikings’ offense and his status as one of the league’s premier receivers.
Chicago’s Stadium Woes
The episode also touched on off-field issues, particularly Chicago’s struggle to secure funding for a new stadium. A recent referendum in Chicago’s 29th Ward was soundly defeated, with Pay explaining the public’s reluctance to support tax increases for stadium projects: “If you give the populace the opportunity, if you give them the choice, hey, do you want more taxes? To a man, they would probably say no, right? Even if you explain to them what the tax is going to pay for and it’s typically things that you would want or you would enjoy, they’ll probably still say, hey, find somebody else to pay for it.”
This development raises questions about the future of the Bears’ stadium plans and how the team might navigate the complex process of securing a new venue without public funding. Pay suggested that alternative funding methods might be employed, such as increased tourism taxes or other indirect means of raising revenue.
Lions Roar with Z’Darius Smith Acquisition
The Detroit Lions made headlines at the trade deadline by acquiring veteran edge rusher Z’Darius Smith. This move addresses a crucial need for the team and potentially shifts the balance of power in the division. June provided the details of the trade: “We acquired Z’Darius Smith and a 7th round pick for a 2025 5th round pick and a 2026 6th round pick, I believe.”
Foster elaborated on the impact Smith is expected to have on the Lions’ defense: “I think that he’s, he comes in and he immediately is the most, impactful edge guy. I mean, he has five sacks on the year already, which is better than anybody else on the edge has fared. And I think that he provides somebody that you have to respect and you have to account for.”
The addition of Smith not only bolsters the Lions’ pass rush but also provides valuable experience to a young defensive unit. His presence could be a game-changer as Detroit pushes for a playoff berth.
Bears’ Running Back Conundrum
The Chicago Bears’ handling of their running back situation has left fans and analysts scratching their heads. Pay from the Bears podcast didn’t hold back in expressing his frustration with the team’s decision-making, particularly regarding the late trade of Khalil Herbert: “Why did it take so long to draft him? To trade Khalil Hunt. Khalil Hunt hasn’t had a snap in three weeks. Uh, it was figured that he was going to be the third back anyway in that rotation. Obviously, obviously D’Andre Swift is the guy because you just gave him eight million dollars. You just drafted Roschon Johnson.”
This move raises questions about the Bears’ roster management and their long-term plans for the running back position. It also highlights the challenges faced by the team’s front office in maximizing value from their assets.
Jared Goff: The Dark Horse MVP Candidate
One of the most intriguing storylines in the NFC North has been the emergence of Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff as a potential MVP candidate. His recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular, as June pointed out: “Starting off 10 for 10 just about the last four games, like I said.”
Dave added context to Goff’s impressive run: “That’s crazy. I know he started out well when he played us. So, and we’re doing everything and within our power B-Flo [DC Brian Flores] was to mess with his head and it didn’t seem to work. He’s the only quarterback so far that it hasn’t worked on.”
Goff’s accuracy and consistency have been key factors in the Lions’ success this season. His ability to perform at a high level, even in adverse weather conditions, has elevated him into the MVP conversation alongside more established names.
Week 10 Previews: Crucial Matchups Ahead
As the season progresses, each game becomes increasingly important for teams vying for playoff positions. The hosts provided in-depth previews of the upcoming Week 10 matchups for their respective teams:
Bears vs. Patriots: A Battle of Rookie Quarterbacks
Pay highlighted the Bears’ injury concerns and the challenge of facing rookie quarterback Drake Maye: “The first thing they’ve been devastated by is bad coaching. The second thing is injuries. In the last two weeks, both tackles didn’t practice today. And we’ve had a revolving door the last two games with on that offensive line.”
“As you saw, another rookie quarterback battle. One thing’s for certain, the Bears can’t take anybody lightly, even if they’re the 2-6 Patriots. The Patriots do do some things well. Their defense isn’t amazing, but they’re sound, and for all sorts of purposes, Drake Maye, he’s electric.” Pay continued.
This matchup will be a test for both teams’ young quarterbacks and could have implications for draft positioning.
Vikings vs. Jaguars: Uncertainty in Jacksonville
Dave discussed the Vikings’ upcoming game against the Jaguars, noting the uncertainty surrounding Trevor Lawrence’s availability: “The Minnesota Vikings travel down to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars, and we don’t know if Trevor Lawrence is going to play or not. He’s supposedly got a sore shoulder. We’ll find out. They’re another team that’s in disarray. We’re wondering if we can get Doug Pederson, their head coach, fired?”
He also mentioned the favorable weather conditions expected for the game: “We expect a beautiful day. It’s supposed to be in the low 80s down there. No winds to speak of, and just gorgeous. We’ll see if Minnesota can get another win, and we’ll find out.”
This game could be an opportunity for the Vikings to gain ground in the divisional race, especially if Lawrence is unable to play.
Lions vs. Texans: Unbeaten Streaks on the Line
Foster emphasized the intriguing matchup between the Lions’ perfect road record and the Texans’ undefeated home streak: “Well, it’s yet another road opponent that, uh, opponent that we’re facing on the road. They’re 6-0 at home, and the Lions are 4-0 on the road, so something will certainly give in this game.”
He also highlighted the strength of the Texans’ defense: “They have a strong defense. They’re ranked second in the league. Um, they have a strong pass rush. They got, uh, Danielle Hunter on one side and then they have, uh, Will Anderson on the other edge. That’s seven and a half and five and a half sacks between the two of them.”
This primetime matchup will be a true test of the Lions’ ability to perform on the road against a formidable opponent.
