Justin Day is Back Talking Vikings & Preseason Surprises
Get ready, Vikings Nation! The much-anticipated return of Justin Day to Purple And Gold For Days is here, and he’s diving headfirst into the Purple And Gold Universe, bringing you the latest updates and commentary on your favorite team, the Minnesota Vikings.
“Welcome to Purple And Gold For Days, a Vikings First And SKOL, and Fans First Sports production,” Justin began with clear enthusiasm. “What’s going on, everybody? It’s great to have you with me. In today’s episode, Dave from Vikings First And SKOL joined me, and we had an excellent conversation about the Vikings’ first preseason game.”
Justin shares that although they cut out most of the J.J. McCarthy talk due to some recent news, there are still plenty of highlights and engaging conversation to look forward to, promising a well-rounded exploration of the team’s current standing.
Deep Dive into the Wide Receiver Corps
The episode kicks off with an in-depth discussion on the Vikings’ wide receiver corps. Justin noted that while everyone has been buzzing about Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor has emerged as a promising number three wide receiver.
“He has looked the part in training camp, and boy did he look the part yesterday, both with Sam Darnold and with J.J. McCarthy,” Justin explained. “I think it’s pretty safe to say that he has absolutely sewn up the number three wide receiver position as long as he can stay healthy.”
The conversation turned to the broader depth of the wide receiver unit, with an emphasis on the team’s offseason acquisitions and other players stepping up. Dave added context by comparing past offseasons where depth was a concern and acknowledged that this year’s showing, even in preseason, provided a glimpse of a robust receiving corps.
“Yes, I know it’s preseason and it’s against second and third-stringers,” Justin conceded. “But it doesn’t matter. Your production is what your production is.” He stressed that while you should take preseason performances with a grain of salt, it’s hard to ignore the noticeable improvements in depth.
Running Back Resilience
Another hot topic was the running back situation. Justin compared Kene Nwangwu’s impressive touchdown run to former Vikings great, Robert Smith, noting the resemblance in their long strides and speed.
“When Kene Nwangwu got that handoff that he ultimately took for a touchdown, he wears number 26, and it kind of reminded me of another 26 in Robert Smith,” Justin said, reflecting on Nwangwu’s capability. They discussed how the new kickoff rules might have affected Wongwu’s chances of making the roster but concluded that his performance had practically solidified his spot.
“I think he’s the number three,” Dave confidently stated, adding that the team will likely keep three running backs plus C.J. Ham. They pointed out that despite Ty Chandler’s drop issues, the running back lineup looks strong heading into the season.
Defensive Insights and Developments
Switching gears to the defense, Justin and Dave identified areas needing improvement, particularly in the middle of the field. Still, there was notable optimism about the potential impact of recent draft picks and offseason additions.
“Their seventh-round pick, [Levi] Drake Rodriguez, absolutely looked the part,” Justin exclaimed, recounting his performance in the preseason game. “I’m not saying that we have found our Pat Williams or Jerry Ball kind of guy, but everybody’s been talking about this guy’s motor doesn’t quit.”
The conversation highlighted Brian Flores’ strategic ingenuity, suggesting that while last year’s improvements were made with “smoke and mirrors,” the added depth could push the Vikings’ defense from middle-of-the-pack to top-tier. Justin shared his excitement about Flores’ ability to leverage multiple chess pieces across the defensive line and linebacker positions.
“Turner looked great,” Justin remarked. “You always love seeing your edge defensive player getting a sack in his first preseason game. They’ve got pieces all over the place on the outside, as well as the linebacking core.”
Roster Depth and Strategic Overhaul
Justin went on a broader strategic discussion regarding roster depth over high-priced players, noting the lack of depth since 2017. He acknowledged the essential role of a franchise quarterback but stressed the importance of a balanced roster.
“When you don’t have a $45 million quarterback, you can have this thing that we used to call roster depth,” Justin quipped, explaining the benefits of not being hamstrung by a few large contracts. He pointed out that this flexibility allows for future playoff runs and sustained success.
Dave agreed, emphasizing the importance of evolving the roster rather than maxing out with a few high-profile players. “I think we’ve gone as far as we can go with this roster constructed the way it is,” Justin added, envisioning a cleaner slate for sustained growth.

Closing Thoughts and Potential Moves
Wrapping up the discussion, Justin and Dave touched on potential signings to bolster the roster, especially in light of injuries. Both agreed that acquiring a seasoned player like Stephon Gilmore would add significant value to the team without breaking the bank.
“I think we’ve got it,” Dave stated, emphasizing the importance of depth and strategic signings. “I think it’s the right move. Will it happen or not? I don’t know. But it’s something to consider.”
The episode concluded on an optimistic note, with Justin expressing excitement for the upcoming season. “Thank you kindly everybody for joining us this evening. “SKOL, Vikings!” concluded Dave.
Justin echoed, “SKOL, Vikings, baby.”
