Vandy Boys Giving Rangers Glimps Of Hope Amidst Disapointing Season

Wednesday night, both Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter pitched on the same night and Rangers fans saw a glimpse of what they once thought the duo would be producing in the big leagues by now.

Rocker who just returned from Tommy John surgery has been lights out in the minors this season. Across two levels in eight games, Rocker has thrown 26.2 innings to the tune of a 2.03 ERA.

If you take just five starts Rocker has made at AA Frisco, he has just a 0.46 ERA with 29 strikeouts and just three walks.

On Wednesday, Rocker fired 4.2 scoreless innings striking out eight in his longest outing since returning from the IL.

Following his strong performance, Rocker earned a promotion to AAA Round Rock, where he will likely spend the season’s final month.

Just a few hours down I35, Jack Leiter started for AAA Round Rock on the same night his former Vanderbilt teammate had his strongest outing of the season.

Leiter had one of his best outings of the season firing 5.2 innings of one-run baseball with nine strikeouts. Not only were the numbers solid, his stuff looked the best it had all season with his fastball sitting 97-99 even hitting 100.

In 17 games with AAA Round Rock, Leiter has a 3.51 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.

The stretch of solid starts for Leiter has reportedly earned him a promotion as well as it is being reported that he will make his next start with the Rangers.

Promoting Leiter comes as Max Scherzer had to cancel his rehab start scheduled for Friday with AA Frisco for an undisclosed reason.

Leiter will look to find some success at the big league level after having an ERA of 16.39 in 19.2 innings with Texas this season.

Despite the big league success not being there for either yet, the Rangers are finding a newfound hope that Leiter and Rocker could soon join a rotation led by Jacob deGrom.

Leiter and Rocker’s strong minor-league performances come at a perfect time as starting pitchers like Jon Gray, Nathan Eovaldi, and Andrew Heaney have their futures with the Rangers up in the air.

If Leiter and Rocker turn into the prospects we once thought they would be, the Rangers’ future pitching staff becomes scary for future lineups.
