USMNT, Pochettino Set For First Major Test
Newly appointed USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino is set for his first competitive slate in his short tenure.
Pochettino and the USMNT will take on Jamaica in a two-leg quarterfinal of the Nations League tournament.
Entering play, Jamaica is unbeaten so far in Nations League Play after battling to a draw against Honduras in their latest group-stage game.
Thursday night will be the first time that Pochettino will have a full slate of players to pencil into his lineup.
Many of the USMNT stars did not suit up for the States’ 2-0 loss to rival Mexico almost a month ago.
After being shut out at Estadio Akron the US will get back strikers Christian Pullisic and Ricardo Pepi.
Tonight’s match will be played in Jamaica from National Stadium Independence Park before the two sides head to Energizer Park in St Louis for the second leg on Saturday.
Against Jamaica all time, the USMNT holds a record of 20W – 3L-10D as they look to go for wins number 21 and 22 and punch their ticket to the Nations League semi-finals.
The USMNT has won the first three editions of the Nations League including beating Jamacia in the semi-finals last season.
The Stars and Stripes claimed a 3-1 extra-time victory over the Jamaican side in the semi-finals before they would eventually route Canada in the final.
Since the US was one of the top four teams in the Concacaf Ranking Index this will be their first match of this season’s Nations League.
