Twice Bitten: Arizona Diamondbacks Sweep Doubleheader from Cleveland Guardians

Doubleheaders are just not the Cleveland Guardians’ thing. In their last seven, they have posted a record of 1-13.

That trend continued yesterday at Progressive Field, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Guardians 7-3 and 5-3.

Cleveland has lost five in a row for the first time this season.

FIGHTING FROM BEHIND

Ben Lively (10-7) gave up two-run homers to Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll to put Arizona on top 4-0 after four innings in Game 1.

Meanwhile, Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt (6-6) had a perfect game through four innings.

That changed dramatically in the fifth inning when Josh Naylor hit a 402-foot home run to right-center field, his 25th of the year.

Also in the fifth, Brayan Rocchio doubled to score Andres Gimenez to cut the lead to 4-2.

Cleveland’s bullpen couldn’t keep the game close, as Pedro Avila and Anthony Gose gave up three runs in the final two innings.

The Guardians’ other run came on a single in the eighth by Jose Ramirez, who picked up his 95th RBI.

Cleveland threatened in the ninth with the bases loaded, but Lane Thomas struck out to end the game.

FAMILIAR FOES

In the second game, Arizona started a guy who was making his debut after being injured all year. Maybe he’ll be rusty.

Oh no, it’s Eduardo Rodriguez! The former Detroit starter had a record of 6-0 against Cleveland.

Make that 7-0, as Rodriguez gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Guardians scored on a sacrifice fly by Angel Martinez and solo homers by Ramirez and David Fry.

Josh Bell, who played for Cleveland last year, mashed two home runs off Carlos Carrasco (3-10) to give him 18 for the year.

HERE COMES ANOTHER ONE

After a day off, Cleveland faces another doubleheader on Friday in Minnesota. The Twins are 3½ games behind the Guardians in the AL Central Division.

Manager Stephen Vogt hasn’t announced a starter for the opener at 2:20 p.m. Alex Cobb will make his Guardians debut in the nightcap, which will start at 8:20.
