College Football Playoff: Did The Committee Get It Right With Alabama?
It has been discussed at length over the last 24 hours — did the College Football Playoff committee get it right on Sunday afternoon?
The action on Championship Saturday created chaos heading into the postseason. What we knew is that Michigan, Washington, and Texas were in after victories in their respective conference championships.
A wrench was thrown in when Alabama defeated Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. This win, along with an injury to Jordan Travis, Ade the committee believe that the Crimson Tide earned a spot in the CFB Playoff over the unbeaten Florida State Seminoles.
The question is, was this decision warranted? The answer is yes.
Let’s look at the facts. Florida State finished 13-0 and won the ACC while Alabama finished 12-1 and won the SEC. This is the first, and might be only, argument for the Seminoles. With the injury to Travis thrown in and performance over the last two weeks, it creeps closer to Alabama.
Second, the Crimson Tide have better wins. Yes, Florida State beat LSU early but Alabama also handled the Tigers by two touchdowns. Alabama also beat Tennessee, Ole Miss, and of course Georgia, while they were all ranked. The win over Georgia is one of the best wins of the year as Alabama took down the reigning two-time National Champion to end a 29-game win streak.
Florida State has wins over LSU, Duke, and Louisville while they were ranked.
Florida State also had a slightly better Strength of Record ranked third in the nation while Alabama came in fourth. Strength of Schedule heavily favored the Crimson Tide, 5th to 55th.
The overall deciding factor was the injury to Travis. It might be unfortunate for Florida State and its fans but facts are facts. The committee has laid out that significant injuries to key players can be a factor when deciding on the Final Four.
Finally, and this has nothing to do with each side, the committee had a chance to change history this year without setting a precedent. The playoff is moving to 12 teams next year and this situation will not happen again.
To those who do not believe this was the right choice, the only argument was record, which is more than fair. Let’s remember, if Travis was healthy, Florida State would be in. This was the deciding factor. There is also a large majority of fans that do not like Alabama or the SEC.
With that being said, there will be no complaints over the next month leading up to New Year’s Day as we prepare to watch Michigan vs. Alabama and Washington vs. Texas fight for a spot in the National Championship Game. This is the best-case scenario where four of the best teams in the nation right now are playing for a title.
