Top Remaining Starting Pitchers Available This Offseason
Free agency around Major League Baseball is in full swing and many of the top players in the league have found new homes.
This might be true but there is still a plethora of talent on the market — both in free agency and on the trade market.
There are also many teams around the league looking for starting pitching. Below, check out some of the top names available that could be with new teams next season.
Corbin Burnes
Many dominoes have fallen in free agency thus far, including the likes of Max Fried. The other name that is going to get big money on a long-term deal is Corbin Burnes. He was traded to Baltimore last offseason but the Orioles have not shown an urgency to bring him back. This leaves the door open for a team like the San Francisco Giants, among others, that could be in for a true ace.
Luis Castillo
Luis Castillo has emerged as the biggest pitcher available on the trading block. The Seattle Mariners have taken calls on their ace and it will be interesting to see his market. Castillo is owed $72 million over the next three years, which means he is more than a rental for teams looking to win right away, but that number could scare some off. The New York Mets remain active for Castillo.
Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease fits into the trend in San Diego recently. The Padres have moved players when they are up for a contract, which is interesting given the fact that the team has spent money. Regardless, Cease could be next out of San Diego. Unlike Castillo, Cease will require a long-term contract and the new team would have to extend him if they do not want him to be a rental.
Jack Flaherty
It was a strong year for Jack Flaherty in 2024 as he prepared for free agency. He won 13 games and pitched to a 3.17 ERA. He also got experience in the postseason on a World Series winner in Los Angeles. At 29 years old, Flaherty is around the same age as other options and might not require as large of a price tag. The market for starting pitchers is high but Flaherty could turn into a bargain.
Sean Manaea
It would not be a surprise if teams were skeptical of Sean Manaea, including the Mets, after the 2024 season. He turned into a legitimate ace and turned in big postseason performances as well in New York. Manaea finished 12-5, pitching to a 3.29 ERA in 31 starts and a career-high 181 2/3 innings. This was by far the best year of his career. The Mets remain high on Manaea but will likely watch this play out.
