Three Comebacks Are Not Enough for Cleveland Guardians
After facing two of the best teams in baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles, the Cleveland Guardians ran into the hottest team in baseball: the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The surprise winners of the National League last year, the Diamondbacks have heated up since the end of June. They beat Cleveland 7-6 last night.
The Guardians battled valiantly, overcoming three deficits before finally losing in the 10th inning.
WELCOME BACK, LOGAN ALLEN
Logan Allen’s first game back from the minors started about as poorly as possible.
First pitch: Home run.
Second batter: Home run.
Fourth batter: Line drive off Allen’s head.
Allen somehow recovered from all this and left the game after five innings with a 3-2 lead.
Jose Ramirez hit an RBI double in the first inning and scored on a groundout by Josh Naylor. Bo Naylor’s RBI single in the second put Cleveland on top.
However, Cleveland’s outstanding bullpen had an off night. Cade Smith gave up two runs in the sixth to put the Diamondbacks in the lead at 4-3.
Andres Gimenez hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, and Cleveland was back on top 5-4.
The seesaw swung back into the Diamondbacks’ favor in the eighth inning, when pinch-hitter Joc Pedersen hit a two-run homer off Scott Barlow.
Cleveland still didn’t give up, as Daniel Schneemann’s sacrifice fly in the ninth sent the game into extra innings.
Alas, even Emmanuel Clase wasn’t able to prevent defeat. Eugenio Suarez hit an RBI single in the 10th give Arizona the winning margin.
REMATCH TONIGHT
Cleveland will try to avoid its first four-game losing streak of the season tonight at 6:40. Ben Lively (10-6) will start for the Guardians against the debuting Eduardo Rodriguez for the Diamondbacks.
