The Time For The Wizards To Rebuild Is Now

If you are a fan of the Washington Wizards like I am, then you are starving for change when it comes to the current NBA franchise that is currently in the DMV. The Wizards, formally the Bullets, was a once a proud franchise as the then Bullets won the franchises only NBA championship in 1977-1978 season and also had some of the greatest players of all-time to don the Washington jersey. The names of Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Earl Monroe, and a guy named Michael Jordan just to name a few of the legends to play in DC.

Over the last 20 years or so many players have come and gone, that either being drafted such as John Wall (#1 2010) , Bradley Beal (#3 2012) and Otto Porter (#3 2013) or signed as free agents such as Paul Pierce, Bernard King, Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison just to name a few that came to play in Washington. More recently ex Wizards have gone on to win an NBA championship after moving on to greener pastures. The Wizards have been in the NBA for over 63 seasons and have had some great seasons making it to the conference semifinals in 2004, 2013, 2014, and 2016 and making the playoffs in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2017 and recently 2020, with that 2020 season being the last season they made the playoffs.

I am not sure if my fellow Wizards fans feel the way that I do, but I am ready for change and I am ready to see my Wizards win some games, be competitive and maybe even win some playoff games. We fans understand that there are going to have to be some major changes in terms of personnel and a new direction. The Wizards recently name interim head coach Brian Keefe as is new head coach with the his focus being player development. What does that mean?. It means, it is time to call it what it is and that is rebuild. The Wizards have some great pieces through the draft with #9 pick in the 2020 draft Deni Avdija in 2020 and last year with #7 pick in the 2023 draft Bilal Coulibaly.

The Wizards in this years 2024 draft have the #2 overall pick and the #26 pick in the first round, as well as having the 51st pick in the second round. If the Wizards are serious about making the team better and having signed a coach that is well known for player development, then they need to acquire more draft capital this year and start the rebuild now. I love Kyle Kuzma but by trading him now, the Wizards can most certainly get more draft picks this year and maybe next year as well. I am ready for the rebuild to start now, not later, but now. I want to get excited about Wizards basketball again and I no a total rebuild will be painful, but in the the long run, the Wizards will once again be a team to reckon with year in and year out.
