The Raiders Did the Right Thing By Firing Offensive Coordinator
FINALLY! The Las Vegas Raiders ripped the bandaid off and did the smear thing. After eight long weeks, the Raiders decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. With how inept the Raiders are to moving the ball, the decision makes sense for now and the future.
It Had to Be Done
The worst part is that Getsy wasn’t “the guy” they originally. The Raiders were set to hire Kliff Kingsbury, who then decided to bolt for the Washington Commanders. Was painful at the time, cause he’s a legitimate offensive coordinator. Can you blame him? Jayden Daniels is a lot more fun than what the Raiders have to offer.
Instead the Raiders had to pivot and hire Getsy. Getsy previously was with the Chicago Bears and all he did was show why it wasn’t all Justin Fields’ fault afterall.
The Raiders offense had pieces and there was plenty to work with. Was the loss of Josh Jacobs going to sting? Absolutely. Was Gardner Minshew or Aidan O’Connell the end of the world at quarterback? No. Instead, the Raiders became allergic to moving the football and it became painful to watch.
The Raiders Inept Offense
This offense had pieces. They had what was a top five receiver in football with Davante Adams, who they then traded to the New York Jets. They also have rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who is the biggest threat this offense has. Jakobi Meyers is a good player, as well as Tre Tucker. This offense has weapons, but they are inept to moving the ball.
Let’s start with the run game. The Raiders struggled last year too, but this is an entirely different set of struggles. Zamir White has shown he isn’t ready for the cowbell back role. The Raiders sit dead last in average rushing yards, and 31st in total rushing yards. Remember the Chiefs game, where they needed THREE yards to score and managed to lose yards instead? Yeah, that was my final straw. Their inability to run does nothing for the pass game and doesn’t allow the play action plays to flow. It makes the Raiders one dimensional.
The Raiders offense has the fifth most pass attempts, but 25th in average passing yards. They don’t air it out often and that’s the other issue; the quarterbacks.
Minshew has been benched three times in the middle of the game. O’Connell has broken finger and Desmond Ridder is now in the mix. It’s just not good enough and puts a lot of strain on the defense.
The Raiders defense is not the problem. In fact, it’s the first time in a long time the Raiders defense is stable. They defend the pass fairly well, as they are middle of the pack. They cannot stop the run, but the losses of Christian Wilkins and Marcus Epps don’t help in that regard.
At the end of the day, the Raiders did the right thing. Is it too little too late? I am not sure, but this organization needs stability and fast.
The Raiders Need Stability
The Raiders need stability. Since Jon Gruden was fired during the 2021 season, the Raiders have endured nothing but turnover and it’s hard to find consistency when that happens. And heck, the team fired Paul Guenther (defensive coordinator) the year prior.
But after Gruden, you had Rich Bissacia as the interim head coach and he took the club to the playoffs. You the brought in Josh McDaniels, who didn’t even last two years. Now, you have Getsy who didn’t even make it half a season.
The stability is on defense with Graham has the defensive coordinator. But you need stability with your coaches and you need stability with your players. It’s a trickle down effect and if the Raiders don’t find that, they’ll be what the media keeps saying they are.
All I want is for the Raiders to find consistency and be a competent football team. Figure it out.
