The New York Jets Are Actively Shooting Themselves In The Foot
“How do bad coaches keep getting opportunities in the NFL?” This is a quote that has been living ‘rent free’ in my head ever since I can remember. It’s one of those ideas that was brought up in a conversation a number of years ago, and has remained in my ‘brain box’ ever since.
It’s an odd question to think about, but a fair one nonetheless. How can a team look at the trash that one team threw away, and bring it in as if it’s treasure? I mean I get it; there are some coaches who find greener pastures in new cities. But more often than not….that is not the case. More often than not……us fans see these random interviews and hirings by our teams, and instantly scream out; “WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING?!?!”
Why do I bring this up, you may ask? Well…..it’s because an organization that has a HISTORY of making questionable decisions, just SHOCKED ME with their most recent HC interview.
We have completed an interview with Matt Nagy for our Head Coach position.

Matt Nagy. MAAATTTTTTT NAGGGYYYYYY! As a Chicago Bears fan, I know this name all to well. Whenever I hear his name, or see it written in the media somewhere, I INSTANTLY have bad PTSD flashbacks of the 2019 playoff “run.” I INSTANTLY have terrible memories of the “Double Doink,” when the GOD-AWFUL Cody Parkey sent the entire city of Chicago into a fit of rage.

He was a god-awful coach, who lasted longer than he should’ve in the Windy City. After an impressive 2018 that saw Nagy win NFL Coach of the Year, he immediately began to spiral down the pit of mediocrity the very next season. His ‘cutesy’ playbook, that was filled with fancy screens, end-arounds and whatnot, was figured out with EASE by opposing defenses. This ended up leading to a DRASTIC DECLINE in the efficiency of the offense, with the unit dropping from 9th to 27th in points scored across his four years with the team.
But then, after he was let go from the Bears, he was brought back into the fold in KC with Andy Reid and his crew. He would start off as the Quarterbacks coach with the team, before being elevated to OC after Eric Bieniemy’s departure. And when that happened……he basically “Nagyed” things up again, if you catch my drift?
Just think about it; this Kansas City squad is NOT THE SAME as in year’s past. Even though they are 15-2 as of writing this (the final week against the Broncos doesn’t really count), they haven’t really been “dominating” people like they have in the past. They’ve been winning games by the skin of their teeth more often than not, and if anything…..it’s really the offense’s fault.
It’s wild! The defending Super Bowl champions are DOWN in almost every major statistical category from Nagy’s first year as OC, to his second. They have become less efficient, and less “lethal,” even though they still have a similar group around them. HELL; to put this into perspective, the Kansas City Chiefs are one of only THREE TEAMS in the NFL to score 30-or-less in EVERY GAME they played this year.
The other two;
- The New England Patriots (4-13)
- The Las Vegas Raiders (4-13)
They. are. BAD! Patrick Mahomes is not the same Patrick Mahomes that we’ve all grown to hate. Travis Kelce is a SHELL of his former self, and has turned into the blubbering lesser-half of Taylor Swift. And the only common denominator in all of this…..is MATT NAGY!
The guy is not a good coach, PERIOD! I get that teams are going to do their ‘due-diligence,’ and interview as many available candidates as they possibly can. So it’s not like Nagy to NY is a “done deal” yet. But this one…..it just doesn’t make sense for me. Nagy’s body of work doesn’t fit what the Jets need at this point in time, and I just can’t see any team improving with him at the helm.
Can he prove me wrong? Sure. But until that happens…..I’m just going to wait, and pray for Jets fans. You don’t deserve the kind of torment that he could bring to your team.
But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
