What the Amari Cooper restructure says about the Cleveland Browns

As the Cleveland Browns were set to open their 2024 training camp this week. There was much speculation on the contract status of their top wide receiver Amari Cooper. Cooper is on the final year of his contract and set to make an estimated 23 million dollars. He held out of mandatory minicamp last month in hopes of a raise and extension from the Cleveland Browns. But on the day the veteran players were scheduled to report to training camp. The Cleveland Browns and Cooper’s representatives came to an agreement.

Amari Cooper’s final year of his contract was restructured to a 25-million-dollar contract. At least 20 million dollars of that contract is guaranteed money. Cooper was able to get a raise for 2024 and the Browns didn’t have to commit more guaranteed money past the 2024 season. It appears to be a win for the Browns and Amari Cooper.

Cooper gets a raise of at least 5 million dollars of guaranteed money. The Cleveland Browns have their number one receiver in camp, on time, and with zero distractions. Also, the Browns do not have guaranteed money committed long term to an over thirty-year-old receiver. The nature of this deal getting done in the timeframe it was done shows the type of organization that the Cleveland Browns have become.

The once often mocked Cleveland Browns were the epitome of dysfunction. Constant turnover in the front office and at head coach, double digit losses almost every season. That changed when Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski took over in 2020. Consistency and stability are the new normal for the Cleveland Browns. That along with an owner spending money to win now. Cleveland Browns fans can give this front office and owner the benefit of the doubt. Because at this point, they have earned it with their competence. And the fans of the Cleveland Browns have earned consistent winning with their loyalty.
