Vikings vs. Browns, Why Am I Watching?

It’s the Browns, I’m always watching. The most important part of this week were the untelevised scrimmages, I wish I could’ve watched those. For the second straight week, the Browns will play very few starters because of the above-mentioned scrimmages, it’s what they do every year. At least they’re consistent.

The Browns quarterback rotation may be different this week. I still expect Jameis Winston to start and play at least a series, but he should be followed by Dorian Thompson-Robinson and then Tyler Huntley. My main concern right now is the left tackle position, so far in the first game and during the scrimmages, it’s been a mess. Wednesday according to the media available to watch, quarterback Deshaun Watson was constantly hurried and would’ve been sacked several times. Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores dialed up the pressure and he’ll do the same during the game. Hopefully backup tackle Hakeem Adeniji can do a better job than James Hudson because I expect Adeniji to start. The one thing I hope to see on offense is a little more consistency. I know it’s preseason, but game one was so disjointed. The Vikings gave up 120 yards on the ground to the Raiders, so maybe this week the Browns can run the ball. More Pierre Strong please.

On defense, the Browns need to work on containment. Last year it was a problem, and it was against the Packers. I not sure if rookie defensive tackle Michael Hall will play due to his arrest this week. If not, this should give more opportunities to Saiki Ika, Jowan Briggs and Chris Williams. Because of the injury to linebacker Jordan Hicks, Mohamoud Diabate and newly signed Brandon Bouyer-Randle will get more playing time. I want to see more of linebacker Devin Bush, cornerback Myles Hardin and safety Brady Breeze. Breeze really jumped off the screen last week.

Because of the season ending injury to Minnesota rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, I expect Jaren Hall and Sam Darnold to play the majority of the game. Against the Raiders in game one, the Vikings had 452 total offensive yards, 310 yards passing, 142 yards rushing and averaged 7.2 yards per play. Running back Kene Nwangwu led them in rushing yards with 52 yards on five carries (10.4 average) and they were led in receiving by Triston Jackson with four catches for 100 yards. As I said earlier, I expect the Viking defense to pressure the Browns offense relentlessly. Against the Raiders, they had four sacks. I hope for a clean game with few penalties and no injuries.
