Is this Amari Cooper’s last year with the Cleveland Browns?

Last week on the day the veteran players reported to Berea Ohio for 2024 Cleveland Browns training camp. Amari Cooper and the Cleveland Browns agreed to a restructured contract on the final year of his current deal. Cooper and his representatives managed to get a $5 million dollar raise. And it was a relief to Browns fans because Cooper held out from mandatory minicamp a month earlier.  $20 million dollars of his restructured deal is guaranteed. The same Browns fans might be wondering how this affects the current Cleveland Browns salary cap situation.

According to overthecap.com, the Cleveland Browns currently have $29, 673,118 of salary cap space. General Manager Andrew Berry has done a masterful job of managing the salary cap. As for Amari Cooper’s contract situation with the Browns, the money or salary cap wasn’t the issue. The issue was investing in guaranteed money on a wide receiver over the age of 30.

Amari Copper just turned 30 years old this offseason.  Analytics will tell you that after the age of 30 years old, a specialty player like a receiver’s production begins to decline.  Although there have been outliers to the contrary. But those outliers are few and far between the reality of age. But what do the Cleveland Browns and Amari Cooper want after the 2024 season?

Amari Cooper was quoted as saying “I want to finish my career in Cleveland.”. That is a good sign of a potential extension being done. But the extension would have to be at the right price. Amari Cooper has been an excellent acquisition for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns traded a 5th round pick to the Dallas Cowboys to get Cooper. His production since then has been outstanding. But the Browns pay for the player they are going to be not the player they once were. A Cooper extension could get done by the 2025 offseason. But it will have to be for the right amount of money satisfying both Cooper and the Browns. Let’s hope as Cleveland Browns fans that will be accomplished.
