Can Ohio State Repeat as National Champions?
Late at night, on Monday January 20th the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the College Football National Championship Game 34-23 to win their 9th National Championship in the school’s history. Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day put himself in elite company with this win. He can be named with Paul Brown, Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel, and Urban Meyer who have all won national championships at Ohio State. No Ohio State team or coach has ever repeated as national champions. Ryan Day could be in even more elite company if he can win consecutive national titles.
Some rumors are circulating that Ryan Day could be heading to the NFL. As of right now, there is no validity to any of those rumors. What is valid is the recruitment and transfer portal players that the Ohio State Football Program has acquired. The 2025 Recruitment Class was ranked in the top three by most publications. But this year’s recruitment does not immediately impact the 2025 Buckeyes. The transfer portal players do impact this season for Ohio State.
As I write this article, Ohio State has six portal commitments. One of them includes the tight end from Purdue Max Clare. He is the top ranked player in the transfer portal. Also don’t forget that Ohio State recruitment classes have not ranked below five since 2019. The program to replenish the roster is place. The ability to repeat as champions is there despite losing top players to the NFL Draft this offseason.
On Saturday August 30th ,2025, the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes will host the Texas Longhorns. FanDuel currently has Ohio State as the favorite to repeat as national champions at +425 odds. It appears that Ohio State has figured out how to utilize the NIL and transfer portal. That along with the level of recruitment, Ohio State can be in the conversation for the national title in 2025 and for years after that. And if you are not a fan of Ohio State, you might have to get used to seeing them in the college football playoffs every year.
