Browns vs. Eagles, Why Am I Watching?
That’s a damn good question. This Sunday, Cleveland travels to Lincoln Financial Field to play Philidelphia at 1:00pm EST. Philly (2-2) is coming off a bye week and last week the Browns (1-4) lost to the Commanders 34-13. The Eagles are currently 8.5-point favorites.
Browns Offense vs. Eagles Defense
When you talk about the Browns offense it’s only a concept of an offense and not a very good one. Cleveland has this week to fix some aspects. The simple solution would be to run the ball. The Eagle’s defense is allowing 5.1 yards per carry to opposing running backs and is ranked 21st against the run. Cleveland needs to start the game in a heavy-set offense with center Nick Harris as the fullback. Run it till they stop the run. They also need to have designed running plays for quarterback Deshaun Watson. Get Watson in space so he can get into an offensive rhythm. If this is successful, the offensive line will start to perform better. They need to stay out of third down and long. For this to work, the QB has to make the right decisions, the offensive line has to block, and the receivers have to catch the ball. The Eagle’s defense is ranked 27th in total defense and 24th against the pass. Philly has sacked the opposing quarterback six times in four games with all their sacks coming off of blitzes. The Eagles are very good at covering opposing tight ends but are suspect at covering opposing wide receivers. They’ve allowed an QBR of 93.1, seven touchdowns and only have two interceptions when opposing wide receivers are targeted. Cornerback Darius Slay has allowed two touchdowns and a QBR of 125 when targeted and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has allowed four touchdowns when targeted. It looks like Philly will start rookie Cooper DeJean alongside rookie first round pick Quinton Mitchell. The Browns offense needs to refocus their offense and stop making stupid mistakes. The Eagles are minus six in turnover ratio.
Browns Defense vs. Eagles Offense
The Philly offense is very talented. They’re ranked eighth in total offense, fifth in rushing offense and 17th in passing offense. As a Browns fan, I dream of numbers like that. Philly’s offense starts with Jalen Hurts. He’s thrown for 930 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions and a QBR of 85.73. He can also hurt you running the ball, he has two rushing touchdowns. It appears wide receiver A.J. Brown will return and pair with DeVonta Smith in the passing game. Philly has a great target in tight end Dallas Goedert and their running game is in great hands with Saquon Barkley, 73 carries, 435 yards, four touchdowns and a 5.96 average. The Browns defense has to stop the big plays, because this offense has big play potential all over the field. While the offensive line gives up a 34% pressure rate, they are big, powerful and talented. The Browns defense will need to pressure Hurts into turning over the ball. He’s fumbled five times and lost three and has turned the ball over in nine straight games. Since the beginning of 2023, Hurt has turned the ball over 27 times. Pressure will have to come from someone else besides Myles Garrett. At this point, it’s hard to say who will be available in the Cleveland secondary, but they’ll have to keep the ball in front of them, again no big plays.
