The Jaguars Coaching Search Drags On
The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching search was rocked by reverberations that all started with the NFL’s Divisional Playoff Weekend.
While the Detroit Lions were upset after their elimination, the Duval Devout were given a gift by the Washington Commanders for the second consecutive week. After the Commanders eliminated the Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL Wild Card round, three Jaguar fan-favorite candidates became available for an in-person head coach interview to replace the now-fired Doug Pederson: Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
Since this weekend all three have been removed from the market. Johnson has been officially introduced as the Chicago Bears new head coach. Glenn is reportedly taking the New York Jets head coaching job. And Coen has pulled himself out of the head coaching search in favor of staying with the Bucs as the NFL’s highest-paid offensive coordinator.
However, that’s not where the impact of the past weekend ends. With the elimination of the Baltimore Ravens from the playoffs, offensive coordinator Todd Monken is available for in-person interviews.
That being said, all hope is not lost among candidates still in the NFL playoffs. With the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles both in conference championship games, this Sunday could lead to Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady becoming available upon either squads’ potential elimination. However, if the Eagles are victorious, perhaps Washington will give the Jaguars the potential biggest gift of all. Their offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury would become available for in-person interviews. At this time, the Jacksonville front office has yet to request an interview with Kingsbury, but recent movements may have him reprioritized among the candidates.
Other potential candidates in consideration include former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, whom the Jaguars have already interviewed as well as former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
