The Good, The Bad, and The Spotty: Jaguars Win 9th Straight Against Colts at Home
At 0-4, the members of the Duval Devout are already wondering if their slogan should be “We can’t be blunter, We want Travis Hunter”. As the only team in the NFL without a win heading into this Sunday hosting the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium for their second AFC South game of the year. Saying panic is setting in is an understatement. However, with the franchise’s first-ever head coach Tom Coughlin getting inducted into the Ring of Pride and the unveiling of the throwback uniforms, Jacksonville earns their first 20204 victory. It’s also the 9th straight over the Colts at home to go 1-4.
The Good
Travis Etienne cemented himself as the fifth-highest running back in receiving years for the Jaguars franchise eclipsing the mark held by James Steward of 853. Etienne finished the afternoon with six catches for 43 yards as well as six carries for 17 rushing yards. Tank Bigsby also had a solid day with 100 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns featuring a 65 yarder that SHOULD HAVE BEEN a game-sealing play.
Josh Hines-Allen coming off of a concussion made an impact on the day. He managed to cancel out the Gabe Davis fumble by recovering the fumble by Colts quarterback Joe Flacco that was caused by Travon Walker on a strip sack. This play enabled the rookie kicker Cam Little to boot three points from 30 yards out with his second field goal of the day to put Jacksonville up 13-10 at the half. Hines-Allen also finished with a sack. Walker had his best game of 2024 with three sacks and a pass defended.
The 21-year-old Little finished the day connecting from also from 23 as well as the game-winning 49-yarder to win the game.
Trevor Lawrence started off hot by completing 13 of his first 14 passes. One of those was an 85-yarder to paydirt by Brian Thomas Jr. for the longest completion for Jacksonville since Week 16 of 2015 (by wide receiver Allen Robinson). It is also the second longest so far in the 2024 NFL season. Lawrence also took advantage of Bucker’s absence with success in the quarterback sneak early in the game while having his best game of football this season passing. He finished connecting on 28 for 34 throws with 371 yards and two touchdowns and an interception.
The Bad
Unfortunately, the Jags were able to translate Larwnece’s early success into touchdowns by going two-of-four in the red zone. He also threw a terrible interception inside the 20 when Jacksonville had a chance to extend the lead to 10 in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
As was brought up in this week’s Keys to the Game, Flacco came out decimating the Jaguars defensive backs. He completed his first nine passes — the first seven of which led to the first Colts touchdown despite the Jags defensive line stopping three straight crams by Trey Sermon at the goal line. It took a pass from Flacco to Michael Pittman Jr on fourth down to secure the touchdown.
Flacco finished the game throwing 44 passes and connected on 33 of them with 359 yards and three touchdowns with a lost fumble. His second touchdown pass to Mo Allie-Cox was on a 3rd and 15 that put the game within three points at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, Flacco completed two big passes with under five minutes left that combined for 111 yards (65 and 46 yards to Alec Pierce) to set up two touchdowns to tie the game at 34.
The Spotty
The officials were at it again. While it benefitted the Jaguars (at the moment) and didn’t stop Flacco’s hot streak to get the first score of the game, Indy wide receiver Josh Downs was flagged for allegedly making “finger guns” pointing forward to celebrate the first down. It didn’t seem like anything more than him pointing with two fingers on both hands. Will the NFL penalize Disney employees during any Pro Bowl festivities that happen in Orlando? It looked similar to how they point when guiding guests through attractions.
