The Good, The Bad, and The Spotty: Jags Hearts Trampled by Texans, 24-20

For the Jacksonville Jaguars to open 0-3 with what their owner Shad Kahn referred to as the best team they’ve ever assembled, the Duval Devout have begun their inquisition finding who is to blame. The crowds on social media have been calling for the heads of coaches, and the general manager with some fans even going back to reliable move of complaining about the $275 million contract extension of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

While there has been improvement since Monday, the Jags are still 0-4. Here are the Good, Bad, and Spotty from Houston

The Good

Special Teams might be the best unit in the franchise. With the strong open recovering a muffed punt which the team turned into points for Brian Thomas Jr. as well as Cam Little continuing to boot the ball through the uprights, they were on point to keep the Jaguars in the game despite the deficiency in other areas.

The offense as a unit was more explosive than they had been since the preseason with Brian Thomas Jr. finishing with six catches for 86 yards and a touchdown and Christian Kirk snagging seven catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. They also gained 158 yards as a team on 24 carries with Tank Bigsby recording 90 yards on seven runs.

The Bad

Injuries. . .  Obviously, every team contends with them, but the extent to which the Jags defense is impacted was excessive. Notwithstanding cornerback Tyson Campbell and tight end Evan Engram who have already missed multiple games, defensive back Darnell Savage, linebacker Devin Lloyd, and Linebacker Foye Oluokun missing left more holes in this defense than anything sliced by a deli. (In fairness Vontrell Miller did a good job filling in at linebacker.)

Between that and the myriad of missed sack opportunities from franchise edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen and the defensive front, CJ Stroud completed 15 of his first 19 passes for 215 yards (second-most in a first half of his career) and a passing touchdown to help the Texans lead 17-13 heading into the locker room. Stroud would finish his day by connecting on 27 of 40 throws for 345 yards and two touchdowns.

For all the bad analysis of Lawrence and national media blaming him for all of the Jaguars’ woes, there were no fewer than three overthrows for easy touchdowns to either Kirk or BTJ. If either of those had hit, the Duval Devout could be talking 1-3 instead of 0-4.

The Spotty

The officials may need to explain themselves on the personal foul on BTJ. He was hit with a 15-yarder for pointing down the field with his thumbs positioned up. The ref interpreted it as “shooting a gun”? I’ll be fair and admit that I pictured a bow and arrow with the way he drew his back hand away towards his body, but to call this a “rifle” pantomime seems extreme.

If the league is trying to stop that, they may want to send a memo, if they haven’t already. Legislating from the field isn’t good for any team or player in the NFL.
