The Good, The Bad, and the Spotty: Jags Fold To Colts, 26-23 OT
Heading into their final game of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars history battling the Indianapolis Colts on the road is ominous — if you’re a member of the Duval Devout hoping the Jags win the football game. So much of that fanbase wished for the Jaguars to return home chalking up a 10th loss in 12 tries at Lucas Oil Stadium for the sake of draft position — and they waited through overtime to get their wish as the Colts won, 26-23.
The Good
The Jaguars Cam Little doing Cam Little things again as the rookie kicker booted in two 53-yard field goals including one that tied the score at 23 with 1:44 left in the contest. This is his fourth of the season from 50 yards or greater to tie a franchise record. He also booted in a 28-yarder to remain perfect on the year inside of 40 yards. Little has also secured the most field goals in a game by a rookie in franchise history.
Jaguars franchise cornerback Tyson Campbell recorded his 36th pass defended. For all the injuries in the secondary, it’s nice to see Campbell is playing today and used that opportunity to tie himself with linebacker Paul Posluzny for the 10th-most in franchise history.
Linebacker Foye Oluokun also secured a 5th 100+ tackle season. One of the more underrated players in the league. Additional credit to the defensive front to defensive end Travon Walker who sacked Indy quarterback Joe Flacco to help force overtime late in regulation and recorded 10.5 sacks on the year for back-to-back double-digit sacks.
The Bad
The Jags let the Colts score points in the first quarter. The touchdown pass from Flacco to Alec Pierce on a 40-yard boom opened the scoring in the game. Credit to the Indy coaching staff for attacking the field deep with all the injuries in the Jaguars secondary including starting safety Andre Cisco who was a scratch from an injury sustained in pregame warmups.
Another element is that the Jaguars defensive line was rendered irrelevant against the Colts running back Jonathon Taylor. Taylor finished the game with 177 yards on 34 carries with a touchdown. While some struggle is understandable due to Josh Hines-Allen missing the final game due to personal reasons, this is also further exposure to Jacksonville’s defensive tackle woes. He was a big reason why the Colts snapped a three-game losing streak against their AFC South rivals.
As for the offense, Mac Jones throwing an interception is one thing, but when Brian Thomas Jr. is clearly behind the secondary on a ball that is underthrown, that is what makes this a bad play. Granted, it was just as good as a punt on the bright side, but when it could have been a game-tying touchdown, that’s a problem. The Duval Devout missed Trevor Lawrence at quarterback no more than at that moment.
The Jags interior offensive line assuring that the Jags go 3-10 in games decided by one score seems to be the perfect metaphor for the Jaguars season. To let Zaire Franklin burst through the middle during overtime and turn a 3rd and six into a 4th and 22 secured the defeat.
The Spotty
We can’t seem to have an NFL game end without a ridiculously questionable call from the officials. The pass interference penalty imposed on Jacksonville nearing the end of the second quarter was not only an uncatchable pass, but the contact on the play was incidental. That being said, Jags corner Deandre Prince never looked for the ball and that’s all the official seemed to be focused on. It enabled the Colts to head into halftime up 20-13 instead of 17-13 in a game that went into overtime.
