Keys To the Game: How the Jags Can Put Away the Packers
The Jacksonville Jaguars finally did it. They played a complete game in London. Special Teams, defense, and offense all had performances in production that gave the Duval Devout something to be proud of. The problem is it was against a reeling New England Patriots franchise that is now experiencing its longest losing streak under the current ownership. The Green Bay Packers will clearly represent a far greater challenge. Here are the keys to the game if the Jags even hope to compete.
Jordan Can’t Love Being in the Pocket
As much as the Duval Devout have complained about Travon Walker as the 1st overall pick in the 2022 draft, the football gods have graced them with a player who is on the uptick in delivering sacks while the presumed alternative Aiden Hutchinson in Detroit is hurt. Also, franchise edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen has only 2.5 sacks to Walker’s six, but Hines-Allen is the team leader in pressures. This must be a factor against Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love.
While star cornerback Tyson Campbell is back in the lineup after hitting the injury reserve in Week 1 after a hamstring injury, the defensive back corps has been decimated with injury issues and struggles throughout the year. Love getting flustered in the pocket to fail on 3rd downs is absolutely essential for Jacksonville to compete.
Arik Armstead Stays in the Middle
It’s not that Jaguar fans were asking for Roy Robertson-Harris to be traded to the Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago. That being said, it may have been a blessing in disguise for Jacksonville. 1st year Jags’ defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen has a well-known penchant for rotating players with reckless abandon for the situation on the field. This would leave defensive lineman and former San Francisco 49er Arik Armstead on the bench or at defensive end rather than playing in the interior where he can more effectively do damage rushing the alongside Hines-Allen and Walker on the edges.
However last week, with RRH gone, Armstead had his most impactful game for hurrying the opposing quarterback, If the Jags continue that trend, not only would Love hate facing the Jags defense, but it would prove more effective in slowing the Packers potent rush attack from Josh Jacobs.
Can Tank Continue His Big Production?
Tank Bigsby is the turnaround story of the year for the Jags. From going to a guaranteed giveaway of the football to the starter filling in for a nicked-up Travis Etienne over veteran runner D’Ernest Johnson, Bigsby is a fantasy owner’s dream in production.
If he gets running, that allows Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and rookie wide receiver sensation Brian Thomas Jr. to open up the offense and convert 3rd downs to keep Love and Jacobs off the field to give the defense — and by extension the team — a chance to win.
