Keys To The Game: How the Jags Can Conquer the Colts

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 0-4. There’s no shine for the Duval Devout who are clamoring for a new coach in Bill Belichick on social media (which is a whole conversation in itself). But the opportunity for bad to turn to worse comes to town in the form of the Indianapolis Colts. Staring down the barrel of an 0-5 record is bad enough, but to allow Indy to break Jacksonville’s nine-game win streak against them in Everbank only ups the stakes.

Here are the keys to the game:

Who’s the Starting Quarterback for the Colts?

With starting sophomore field general Anthony Richardson day-to-day with continued soreness after a hip injury he suffered Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, there’s a very real chance that former-Brown-Jet-Raven and NFL ageless wonder Joe Flacco will get the start.

Flacco completed 16 of his 26 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers in relief of Richardson. While running back Jonathan Taylor provided support and balance running the football, a performance like that against a terrifying Steelers defense is something that all NFL backup quarterbacks should aspire to.

But what makes Flacco so perfect for the Colts to start in this game is some element of deja vu. . .

The Jags Secondary is Banged Up

One might remember that last week the Jaguars defensive backs were dealing with injuries. Even rookie Jarrian Jones throughout the game playing the Texans was dealing with a shoulder injury and was playing based on “pain tolerance”. With Tyson Campbell as their best corner still on IR after Week 1 and Darnell Savage as a veteran safety/nickelback limited in practice, Ronald Darby and Monteric Brown will have their work cut out for them.

What makes this all so familiar is that this is a similar state to where the Jags were facing the Browns and then-Brown Flacco. Jacksonville lost that contest as Flacco tore off on a campaign to take Cleveland to the playoffs that was so impressive that he stole the Comeback Player of the Year from someone who LITERALLY died on the field for a stint on national television.

Can Trevor Get Right?

For the first three games of the season, there was always something (except for the interception in Buffalo on Monday Night) where mistakes the team made weren’t 100% Lawrence’s fault. That being said, Trevor missed no fewer than three sure touchdowns in the contest would could have turned the tide in a four-point loss to Houston.

With rookie weapon Brian Thomas Jr. facing a young Colts secondary, it seems like there will be opportunities to capitalize and make an explosive play. Provided he can stay protected, it falls on Lawrence to be the passer that stats say he is in that situation.

Should the Jags extend the streak to 10 for their first 2024 win, that would not only leave an October scare so chilling that the Colts may begin to think of EverBank Stadium as a haunted house. but the Duval Devout will likely ordain the throwback jerseys to be worn that game as religious relics.
