Keys To the Game: How the Jags Can Leap Past Lions

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have to look far for a strategy to compete with the Detroit Lions. It’s as simple as looking at both teams’ performances last week. The Jaguars had three takeaways against the Minnesota Vikings whom they held to 12 points while the Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw five interceptions against the Texans. Now while the Jags still somehow managed to lose to Minnesota and the Lions held on to win there is still a chance for Jacksonville to make the miracle happen. Regardless of those members of the Duval Devout who are Hunters for Travis out of Colorado cheering for a loss and the resulting higher draft pick, here are the keys to an upset Jaguars win.

CJ Bearthard

It may feel odd that quarterback CJ Beathard is back on the roster, but it makes sense. While Mac Jones in his first start led the Jaguars to scoring first in last week’s contest, it also ended with them only scoring seven points in total. Jones looked scared throughout the game and clearly wasn’t able to execute head coach Doug Pederson’s offense to outscore a team that didn’t score a touchdown all four quarters.

That combined with the lingering shoulder issues for franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence, enter CJ Beathard’s return to the roster. Beathard had been the previous backup in the remainder of the Pederson era, so if the Jags were making a change to provide a spark in scoring with some confidence, it made sense to go get Bethard who already is familiar with the offensive system.

The Jags Pass Rush

Travon Walker, Josh-Hines Allen, and the defense may only have produced one sack this past Sunday at EverBank Stadium, but it was enough to scare the Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold into bad throws. The key to this was the pressure and aggressiveness with which they chased Darnold into mistakes — two of which happened in the red zone.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) makes a pass against Tennessee Titans during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024.

Pair that with whatever film Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen may be able to examine from Goff’s five-interception performance, and the semblance of a game plan to take points away from an otherwise explosive Lions offense presents itself. That being said, if Jacksonville can’t stop running back Jamir Gibbs on the ground, whether Goff is throwing a pick may become a moot point.

Targeting Brian Thomas Jr

The explosive rookie wide receiver only had three targets last week against Minnesota. While the receiver corps might be significantly thinner with Christian Kirk out for the year due to injury, offensive coordinator Press Taylor may be wise to involve Brian Thomas Jr in the offense in more ways than just a lottery ticket for a big play. It may serve to confuse the Lions to involve him in shorter yardage as they are forced to respect him on a deep shot down the field.

If all this goes according to plan, the Jaguars may find themselves aggravating all the “Travis hunters”.
