Keys to the Game: Betting on the Jags to Beat Vegas
With the Jacksonville Jaguars flying cross-country to face the Las Vegas Raiders, it’ll be the first game in a while not at 1 p.m. on a Sunday for them. This is only one of several things out of the ordinary for the Jags this week as the Duval Devout prepares for the home stretch of games.
It’s “Travis hunters” hoping the Jaguars get a high draft to get Colorado’s Heiman Trophy winner Travis Hunter against the Raiders who are hoping to get a high draft pick for those who want Hunter’s teammate Shedeur Sanders. Will the Duval Devout still be in the hunt for Travis or will Raider Nation have a better chance to Pander for Sanders? That’s the main storyline of this game – which team . . . loses? Here are key factors that will determine that.
Plundered Pass Rush
There was a time when the Raiders defensive line was a force to be reckoned with. Defensive end Maxx Crosby and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins were supposed to be difference-makers designed to leave the quarterbacks of the other AFC West teams trembling in fear. Unfortunately, since the beginning of the 2024 season, both players are now on injured reserve thanks to sustaining injuries that require surgery.
Considering that both of the Jags starting guards have been limited in practice this week along with tackle Walker Little, this could make the matchup in the trenches relatively even. That means there is a bit less chance for Jacksonville quarterback Mac Jones to commit turnovers.
The QB “Battle”
The only other team with more of a disaster at the quarterback position than the Tennessee Titans might be the Raiders. While Desmond Ridder started against the Atlanta Falcons last week, Aiden O’Connell is a full participant in practices for Sunday.
That being said, can he commit fewer turnovers than Jags passer Mac Jones while Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walkers are working the pass rush? Considering the struggles with health in the Jacksonville secondary, that might be the key match-up on the day.
Rookie Rush
The two most potent weapons remaining on the Jaguars offense might just be rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas and rookie kicker Cam Little. BTJ broke the franchise record for rookie touchdown receptions last week. He stands at eight with three more games to go.
Meanwhile, Cam Little has been electric connecting on 22 of his 24 total field goal attempts with no misses inside of 40 yards.
