The Art of the Robbery: Iconic Home Run-Robbing Catches in MLB

In the world of Major League Baseball, few moments rival the excitement of a home run, but equally thrilling is witnessing a defender execute a jaw-dropping catch that denies a hitter a round-tripper. Watching the Texas Rangers Travis Jankowski rob Andrew Vaughn of a game winning 3-run-homer on August 28th made me want to research some of the best home-run robbing catches in the last 30 years or so.

So here is the list I came up with, hope you enjoy.

 Ken Griffey Jr. – April 25, 1997

Ken Griffey Jr., one of the game’s greatest outfielders, made an unforgettable catch while playing for the Seattle Mariners on April 25, 1997. Griffey’s leaping grab at the top of the center-field fence denied the Detroit Tigers’ Brian Hunter a home run. Known for his smooth swing, Griffey showcased his defensive prowess with this play, combining athleticism and impeccable timing to preserve the game.

Mike Cameron – May 11, 2003

Mike Cameron’s name is synonymous with extraordinary defensive plays, and his performance on May 11, 2003, is a testament to his skill. Playing for the Seattle Mariners, Cameron made a spectacular, leaping catch at the center-field fence to rob the San Diego Padres’ Phil Nevin of a home run. Cameron’s acrobatics were so impressive that he actually collided with the fence but managed to hang onto the ball. His catch remains one of the most memorable defensive plays in baseball history.

Jim Edmonds – June 10, 2004

Jim Edmonds was a maestro in center field, and his catch on June 10, 2004, is one of the most iconic of his career. Playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Edmonds made a gravity-defying leap to rob the San Diego Padres’ Phil Nevin of a home run. Edmonds’ ability to make these kinds of catches with consistency solidified his reputation as one of the best defensive outfielders of his era.

Gary Matthews Jr. – July 1, 2006

Gary Matthews Jr. didn’t play for the Rangers for all that long, but his impact on July 1 of 2006 will still never be forgotten. The Astros Mike Lamb hit what he and everyone in attendance (myself included) thought was a grand slam. Matthews Jr. spiderman climbed the wall and brought it back with what can only be described as a superhuman effort. Still to this day it is the best catch I’ve seen in person.

Andrew McCutchen – June 25, 2009

Andrew McCutchen, then with the Pittsburgh Pirates, made an unforgettable home run-robbing catch on June 25, 2009, against the Boston Red Sox. McCutchen sprinted to the center-field fence, leapt high, and managed to pull back a home run from the bat of David Ortiz. His speed, timing, and ability to judge the ball made this catch a highlight of his career.

Kevin Pillar – April 14, 2015

Kevin Pillar, with the Toronto Blue Jays, showcased his defensive prowess with a remarkable catch on April 14, 2015. Pillar leaped at the wall to rob the Tampa Bay Rays’ Steven Souza Jr. of a home run. Known for his acrobatic catches and defensive highlights, Pillar’s play was a standout moment of the season.

Mookie Betts – August 15, 2016

Mookie Betts, known for his exceptional all-around play, made an impressive home run-robbing catch while with the Boston Red Sox on August 15, 2016. Against the San Diego Padres, Betts made a leaping grab at the right-field fence to deny Matt Kemp a home run. Betts’ ability to make such plays with regularity is a testament to his elite defensive skills.

Jackie Bradley Jr. – April 29, 2016

Jackie Bradley Jr., with the Boston Red Sox, made a spectacular home run-robbing catch against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 29, 2016. Bradley sprinted back to the center-field fence and made an incredible leaping grab to take a home run away from Kevin Pillar. His ability to make such high-impact plays was a key factor in his defensive reputation.

Harrison Bader – July 8, 2022

Harrison Bader of the St. Louis Cardinals added to his defensive highlights with an incredible catch on July 8, 2022. Against the San Diego Padres, Bader made a leaping grab at the center-field fence to deny a home run. His defensive effort preserved the game and showcased his exceptional range and timing.

Robert Hassell III – July 22, 2023

Robert Hassell III of the Washington Nationals made headlines with a stunning catch against the New York Mets on July 22, 2023. Racing back to the wall, Hassell III made a leaping grab to deny Pete Alonso a home run. His defensive play was a highlight in a season filled with exceptional performances.

Conclusion

These remarkable home run-robbing catches from the past 30 years highlight the incredible skill and athleticism of some of MLB’s finest outfielders. From Mike Cameron’s collision with the fence to Robert Hassell III’s late-inning heroics, these plays remind us that baseball is as much about exceptional defense as it is about thrilling offense. As we continue to enjoy the sport, one thing remains clear: the artistry of the home run-robbing catch will always be one of baseball’s most exhilarating elements.
