TGIF: David Fry Keeps Playoff Party Going for Cleveland Guardians
David Fry went from All-Star in the first half of the season to part-time designated hitter in the second half.
Last night, he was the toast of the town.
Fry smashed a two-run homer to propel Cleveland to a 5-4 victory in Detroit, setting up a climactic Game 5 on Saturday at 1:08 p.m. at Progressive Field.
ENDING THE DROUGHT
The Guardians wasted no time in ending their 20-inning scoreless streak. Lane Thomas singled to score Steven Kwan in the first inning.
Detroit tied the game when Trey Sweeney hit a sacrifice fly in the second off Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee.
Jose Ramirez put the Guardians back in the lead with a solo homer to left field in the fifth inning.
The Tigers tied the score again in the fifth on a homer by Zach McKinstry and took the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Wenceel Perez.
FRY ME A RIVER
In the seventh inning, Fry’s pinch-hit home run put Cleveland up 4-3, putting the Guardians in control with their dominant bullpen.
When Fry came back to the plate in the ninth, he laid down a squeeze bunt score to Steven Kwan.
The insurance run was important because Detroit scored in the ninth off Emmanuel Clase.
The RBI grounder by Jace Jung was the fourth run that Clase has given up in this series. Clase only allowed five earned runs in the entire regular season.
Clase struck out Matt Vierling to end the game and set up Game 5 in Cleveland. Matthew Boyd will get the start for Cleveland against Cy Young Award favorite Tarik Skubal.
The winners will advance to the AL Championship Series to face the New York Yankees, who eliminated the Kansas City Royals last night with a 3-1 victory.
