TGIF 2.0: David Fry Saves the Cleveland Guardians Season … Again

The Cleveland Guardians celebrated Big Christmas and Good Fry Day on the same night.

Laughing in the face of defeat, the Guardians used two-run homers by Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry to shock the New York Yankees 7-5 last night.

The victory saved the Guardians from a 3-0 deficit in the American League Championship Series, and a win tonight would pull them even with the Yankees.

SO MANY HEROES

Matthew Boyd allowed the magic to happen by limiting the Yankees to two hits in the first five innings. He only gave up one run on a single by Jose Trevino in the second inning.

Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead.

Andres Gimenez singled in the sixth to score Lane Thomas with a much-needed insurance run.

THE BANG BANG GANG

You need insurance when facing the Bronx Bombers, and you can only hold them down for so long.

Aaron Judge tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth, and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a solo shot to take the lead.

Both homers came off Emmanuel Clase, who has surrendered more earned runs in the postseason (6) than in the regular season (5).

Gleyber Torres added a sacrifice fly, so the Guardians faced a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the ninth.

LOVING THE LONG BALL

Noel was not having a great postseason (1-for-14) when manager Stephen Vogt called on him to pinch-hit last night.

However, “Big Christmas” blasted a two-run homer to center field off Yankees closer Luke Weaver to save the Guardians’ season.

Pedro Avila pitched a scoreless tenth inning for Cleveland, and Fry sent the crowd into delirium with a two-run, walk-off bomb off former Yankees closer Clay Holmes.

This is the second time Fry has pulled the Guardians back from the edge of elimination. He homered in Game 4 against the Tigers, and the Guardians ended up winning Games 4 and 5.

Gavin Williams (3-10, 4.86) will see his first postseason action tonight, while the Yankees will counter with Luis Gil (15-7, 3.50). First pitch is set for 8:08 on TBS and Max.
