3 Teams That Should Look to Acquire Myles Garrett this Offseason

What a time to  be alive if you are a sports fan. The NHL had two straight Fridays where a blockbuster trade took place. The NBA said, “hold my beer” and the trade involving Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves through the entire sports world. Welp, the NFL has now entered the chat. Cleveland Browns super star pass rusher Myles Garrett has made it clear to the front office that he wants out and that he is seeking a trade. It is rare a player of his caliber and stature wants to leave the one place he has called home. Given the state of the Browns and where they are headed, he wants to compete and win.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl

Now we are officially on Garrett watch, as this move could change the landscape of the league. Garrett is an enormous talent and is arguably the best pass rusher in the league today. The fun part now is seeing which teams should look to inquire about acquiring him. Heading into the 2025 season, Garrett will carry a salary cap hit just shy of $20 million. Here are teams that should look to acquire Garrett and help themselves deliver a championship.

Chicago Bears

Where have I seen this before? A quarterback on a rookie deal and a  star pass rusher available. Oh right, the Bears once did this and not that long ago.  When Mitch Trubisky was on his rookie deal, the Bears acquired Khalil Mack from the Raiders and made that their window. With Caleb Williams on his rookie deal and Ben Johnson leading the way, this is a no brainier decision for the Bears front office .to help maximize this window. The Bears have talent on both sides of the ball and adding a player like Garrett would make the defense much better.

The Bears defense ranked 27th in average yards per game, which is not good. They were poor in the run game and teams were getting their looks in the pass game. They did rank middle of the pack in sacks, but Garrett easily improves that number. It is worth the gamble, especially with the quarterback being on a cheap deal for the time being.

New England Patriots

Nobody has more money to play with thank the New England Patriots. They have the most salary cap to spend, as it stands at $120 million. Even with adding Garrett to the fold, they would still have $100 million left to play with and that gives them plenty of room to add. The Patriots need numerous things to help fill out their roster. They need to improve their skill positions, primarily the wide receiver position. However, the Patriots need to add pass rushing and in the worst way possible.

The Patriots do have the fourth overall pick in this draft and could very well draft Abdul Carter with that selection. He is regarded as the best pass rusher in this draft class. In addition, adding Garrett immediately improves their pass rush. The pass rush was virtually non-existent, as they finished 27th in sacks with 52. Furthermore, the Patriots allowed the most passing yards, so adding Garrett could make a huge difference. There are solid playmakers on that side of the ball and given Mike Vrabel being at the helm, making the big splash move could be a great one for his first year as the head coach.

Detroit Lions

This one is a no-brainer decision. The Lions have approximately $46 million in available cap space, so adding Garrett fits the bill and with money to spend and play around with elsewhere. This would be the perfect destination for Garrett, especially if he wants to compete and win a Super Bowl. Head coach Dan Campbell has turned this franchise around and the Lions are not far away for winning a  championship. Furthermore, he would join pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson and would create one of the most potent pass rushing duos in the league and be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

Hutchinson has been quite productive and was on pace to set a career high for himself in sacks. Hutchinson had 7.5 sacks in the five games he played in 2024. The Lions defense was not bad, but with Garrett could be even better. Only one player is above Garrett for the most sacks since 2017 and that is TJ Watt. Adding Garrett makes their pass rush better and will ultimately beef up their pass defense. The Lions have everything to be a legit championship team and adding Garrett solidifies that.
