Tavares Scores 20th of the Season in Win vs Philadelphia

On the back half of a home and home matchup, both teams are well aware of what the other offers.

Within the first five minutes, the Leafs and Flyers continued their physical matchups as Joel Farabee and Connor Dewar squared off to try and ignite both teams’ offense.

Philadelphia scored first, with a goal coming from Travis Konecny for his 19th of the season. With a low event period from the Leafs where they only registered 2 shots on goal the entire period, Toronto went to the dressing room down a goal.

They quickly answered in the second however, with a powerplay goal coming from John Tavares, with a quick snap shot over Fedetov’s left shoulder. This goal marked Tavares’ 20th of the campaign, also marking his 15th season reaching the 20-goal plateau.

Not too long after, Travis Konecny found the back of the net for the second time in the game, notching his own 20th goal. Conor Timmins turned the puck over in the defensive zone, leading to a wide open Konecny to put it past Woll.

Less than a minute after Konecny’s second of the night, Auston Matthews scored his first goal since returning from a great play from linemates Mitch Marner and John Tavares. A nice give-and-go play found Matthews in the slot ready and waiting for a snap shot to tie the game back up.

Deadlocked at 2-2 going into the third, both teams are working hard to get the upper edge. Philadelphia wass getting pucks on net while Toronto tried to catch up. In the latter half of the period, Toronto won the face-off and got the puck at the blueline for Phillipe Myers, who went D-to-D to Morgan Rielly and took a shot from the point with coverage in front of the net. Matthew Knies got a stick on it and tipped it past Fedetov for his 16th of the season, keeping his hot streak alive. Knies’ goal now marks a career high in his young and fresh NHL career.

With a few penalties in the end, and Flyers’ forward Owen Tippett missing a wide open net to tie the game late, the Leafs walked out of Philadelphia with the win. Their 5th straight win is on the backs of strong goaltending, and the high-level play of the returning Auston Matthews, who finds a way to contribute every shift.

Toronto’s on the ice next in Raleigh as they take on the Hurricanes on Thursday night.
